OT for jon f mn

In 2 days we are taking a run to Edmonton, Alberta and seeing as you appear to have alot of knowledge on traveling..is there any easy way around Chicago....coming from the east? Last time we went, I was kinda surprised that the whole Chicago metro area seemed to affect our travel for about 4 hours going around it...........Thanks for any tips!!............

I go from western Pa to central Wi via I90 and take I80 west around the southern end of Chicago then take I39/51 north to Il/Wi border and get back on I90. If I go thru at night 2am, I take I90 right through Chicago but there is still a lot of traffic.
I went through once and there was an accident in my westbound lanes. No fun sitting in traffic for 3 hrs. If one of those fools crashes, it will take a lot of time. You could take 294 around but thats a lot of tolls and stops unless you have EZ Pass I,m going out again this summer, hope Jon has a better way.

I would go 80-294-290-90. Stay away from 7am-930am and 4 pm- 6 pm and you should be good. Chicago used to be a bear but not so much anymore.

There is construction on 90 now but it's not bad. You can take 88 off 294 to 39. It's about the same either way time wise.

When I travel toward Cleveland,OH or further east, I also hate going around Chicago, found traveling through MI and the UP of M across WI to be only 100 miles longer and about 1 hr more time. So much less stress, I've done this several times.
Found it the best way to go. I leave central MN, 20 miles west of Jon and stay the night in Lansing or Jackson,MI.

that usually is about as good as any - if you time to go thru in the middle of the night 90 all the way isnt too bad

I travel from Columbus OH to North Dakota sometimes and it is much easier for me to take I70 to Indy and then I74 to Bloomington, then get on 39/51 straight north to Wisconsin and miss that whole mess in Chicago. It does add about 100 miles to the trip but its (almost) all rural country driving.

Same here....go though Bloomington the last few times......away from chi town, whether going east or south.

What's bringing you to the "City of Champions"? Actually, they should change the name to city of has beens as far as are sports teams go. LoL

You sure you want to come to Alberta? its currently snowing here about 30 miles east of Edmonton....

Stepkids are there.....snowed here in upstate new york yesterday so another 2 weeks of cold and snow won't bother too much....but it sure is depressing.......

Is there still construction on 80 there? Some three years ago I drove through there in the morning, It seemed like over an hour with only a foot on either side.

I agree with Casecollector. When I go to Kansas or Oklahoma hunting, I like to leave Michigan right after supper. Miss 90% of Chicago traffic and same with St. Louis. I try to drive straight through with just a cat nap at a rest area if I get tired. I'm getting older so that option may change. I've been on 55 around Old's area and seemed to be the only one on the road.

Not sure where you are starting from. According to Map Quest, from Detroit MI, it is the same mileage and a couple of hours quicker to go through Michigan"s UP.
