Massey 135 Muffler

I recently purchased a 1972 Massey 135. The exhaust pipe on the tractor does not seem right. It is a vertical exhaust that is sitting right next to the hood, actually rubbing on the hood. There is an exhaust pipe bracket under the left wheel indicating that the pipe possibly should not be a vertical exhaust but rather mounted to blow out the back. I would like to install the proper exhaust, any ideas?

Thanks

The MF 135 was available with a vertical exhaust as you describe or a down swept exhaust that in the case of the 3 cylinder diesel engines passed under the left side foot plate and the outlet was just under the rear axle housing.
The down swept exhaust was very popular with fruit farmers and Hop growers over here in Kent as it avoided damage from or
to overhanging trees etc
From memory the vertical exhaust does pass very close to the side of the bonnet panel but it should have a small clearance unless it has been bent at the base of the muffler where it clamps on to the exhaust outlet stubb.

Mine has the three cylinder perkins gas engine. Should I stick with the vertical or does it matter?

Ford offered either for most of the old tractors, so I expect MF did as well. One series of old Fords had a cast iron part for the up exhaust that was often omitted and few people know about it. It moves the vertical pipe out away from the sheet metal. I expect that by perusing the AGCO on line parts book you could find everything that you need to go either way.

If you are happy with a vertical exhaust then stay with it.
One problem with using the down swept exhaust is that if you use the tractor for haymaking or straw baling the hay or straw can build up on the hot exhaust and can ignite.
It does depend on how you are intending to use the tractor along with your personal preference.

My 135 when I bought it had it go down and under the left side. Like mentioned, it can and did start a fire. I bought a vertical exhaust(aftermarket) and had to cut it and rotate it slightly and re weld, as it was up against the hood.
