trimming neighbors trees

I would like to know what the common rule is about trimming trees on a fence line with a neighbor. Our side is pasture ground that gets mowed every year and the other side of the fence is a wooded area. Over hanging branches on to our side would scratch the tractor during our mowing each year. We are more than happy to cut the branches back, but is it neighborly to throw them over the fence or what?? Ryan

You can trim the branches on your side, but you should dispose of the branches yourself. Always best to try keep up the neighborhood relations too.

It probably varies by location but here in IA you own anything straight up from the property line. If you cut them down and throw them over the fence I would say its littering. Maybe the neighbor wouldn't mind, it never hurts to ask.

I would talk the neighbor first, but that said I have always thrown them back where they grew from. I have several different neighbors and they are all different. One never sees the timber on my side, one take care of that kind of stuff himself. Another says if I cut em he will get rid of them (along cropped fields).

"We are more than happy to cut the branches back, but is it neighborly to throw them over the fence or what??"

That statement really amazes me!!!! How in the world would you think it is neighborly to threw brush across the fence onto the neighbors land????

I would be pretty mad if you threw the limbs on to my side. I usually just trim the limbs back and pile them on my side and then burn them later.

greed!

Pretty good chance his neighbor heats with wood and that"s probably why he asked that question. Give him a break.

It depends on how important you are. Here if pecans fall on the road or right of way or your property you will be charged with stealing if you pick them up. However I have never heard of an owner go onto the right of way or neighbor's property to clean up a fallen or broken tree/limb. TDF

You already know the answer to this...providing you know your neighbor. I have a neighbor that NEVER checks his fence and his land is wooded. HIS trees fall onto (our) fence all the time. He never bothers to fix the fence....since he never knows it happened anyway. I always cut up the dead fallen tree, fix the fence.....donating all the wood back to him. I just toss it across the fence back into his woods. By the time the tree falls over, the wood is junk anyway.

If you're the neighbor, I can't see where you'd possibly have a problem with YOUR branches from YOUR tree being returned to YOUR property where they belong.

I would never consider dumping anything on my neighbours property.
I was taught to clean up and dispose of it as if it were mine.

here are my own rules: I trim trees along people"s yard, I take the branches. I trim trees along woods (with limbs all over them already) I keep the fire wood and toss branches into the woods. We fix the fences, as we have the live stock. One up & coming problem is trees constantly get taller & wider. Attack them when small and do it regularly. No body will miss a sapling.

I trim it, then clean it up. I don't even throw a switch over the fence. My neighbors give me the same respect in return.

but is it neighborly?? Ryan

The neighborly thing to do is ASK THE NEIGHBOR!

My new ground fronts 7 different property owners. I have discussed with all but 2 of them how the fences will be handled. I have a paper with notes on each one, as they are all different so far.

Just ask him...

on't you think if you take the firewood you should also take the branches?if it is your line of thinking that the branches is theirs then would the firewood not be theirs too?
