Egg hatching ?

been hatching out eggs for a couple years now,always seem to get a lot of roosters,I would like more hens is there a way of telling which eggs are male or female? I read somewhere rooster eggs are more long and narrow,and hens are more round,Is this true? thanks for any help

I've never heard of any REAL way to determine the gender based on the shell.

male to female ratio should be very close to 50%.

But if it's not, it's just due to luck.

sxx links allow you to pick them out easily when they're hatched, but other than that - if you don't want to deal with roosters, you've got to buy sorted chicks.
 
My wife works for a large hatchery in Iowa, they pay millions every year for trained experts to do what you are asking. If you could tell prior to hatch they would wouldn't be spending that kind of money, I guarantee it.
 
I used to work in a poultry when I was in high school.
All chicks were sexed after they were hatched.
My job was to get rid of all the rooster chicks. The poultry did not save them.

I've hatched tons of them and it is a crap shoot. Last year out of the 24 layers I hatched there is not ONE ROOSTER. I'm not sure how I managed that. It may be like humans - the rooster may determine the gender.

I've gotten to the point that I just order them. My Cornish cross are coming the 11th and my Bovan layers are coming the end of April. Still not sure how many turkeys I am doing. I hate them but they sure taste good.
 
Can't help you JD, I've always bought chicks, over the last 10 years only twice I had straight pullets, or hens, i don't know if there miss labeled, or the hatchery just throwes in random roosters, Lol, I just picked up 15 last Sunday for my 2.5 year old daughter from tsc, they were labeled as pullets, but well see.
