IH 990 Haybine

Son's friend found a 9 foot IH 990 Haybine and is considering buying it. He doesn't know anything about them so he was asking me if I knew anything about the 990. I know nothing about it so now I'm asking you guys. Is it known to be any good? He doesn't do much haying, just mainly waterways for horse hay. My son is going with him this afternoon to take a peek. He said it looks like it's an old model, maybe from the 60's, 70's? To any of you guys and gals know anything about this model? Thanks, Jim

Yes, I use one to cut about 20 acres of hay. Nice old machine uses a fiber roller on a metal roller so not so much the trouble of expensive rubber rollers falling apart like on the older New Hollands. I like it a lot. Should not cost more than about $1500 in really good shape. I bought mine in decent shape for $700 but I have seen good ones at auctions go for the higher price. I will likely buy the first nicer one that comes up around here because it works great for me. If I decide to do more hay I would probably invest in a disc mower.

The asking price is about what you paid for yours. Thanks for the good word. The owner told him it's not much to look at but it's in good shape. Ironically, the owner bought a disk mower to replace it with. Jim

I do about 75 acres a year with one. It's a pretty simple machine, and has been fairly reliable for me. It's not real fast, but it works. I gave $600 for it
I'd love to have a discbine, but can't afford one yet.

I still use one to do 6000 square and its been as reliable as the day is long. It looked ready for the scrap pile when I got it 15 years ago and exluding tires, knifes and belts the only repair has been a grease seal on the output shaft of the gear box. I paid $800 for it then and could likely get the same for it tomorrow.
Good old machines.

Your question has come up here a few times. I notice because I have one but I haven't used it in about ten years. Every time the 990 comes up there is nothing but good said about them. Mine is for sale for $400. they take a lot of grease.

I have one, had it 5 years now. Installed all new guards and bent them all for perfect gap. on sections. Works great. Good rubber on roller.Paid 2K for mine.

Beware on the prices. If you've got horse people with a few acres that wants to make their own hay, they will tend to run the prices up on any sort of small haybine. Normally they go after the NewHollands though, and really go nuts on the 7'ers.

I used one on my first cutting alfalfa for a few years back in the late 70's. Neighbor owned it and it had seen a lot of use before I ran it. It did a good job, no problems and it crushed hay very well. It was decent load for my original low compression 1941 John Deere A.

I never used one but according to the ads at the
time they had one neat feature: When the header is
picked up, the rollers spread apart making it
easier to clean plugs out.

The 990 was a great machine. Dad had two seven ft machines years ago and we made 20,000 small squares a year.We replaced the knife each year and greased them each morning.Do check the rolls and if it has the metal spirals make sure no metal is missing.Neighbor was mowing and a piece of the steel off the roll came loose and hit him in the head causing him to need stiches. Some machines has two rubber rolls and some had one steel and one rubber. We sold ours and went to NH machines because we felt the intermeshing rolls on the Nh helped to dry the hay faster. We needed perfect hay because most of our market was horse people. We never had any repairs other than normal wear parts.

(quoted from post at 16:40:44 03/21/14) To begin with.......IH did not build a haybine.Hew Holland has patent rights to the name Haybine.

OK so you have begun, anything constructive to add this time?
