5.9 cummins transplant

Hey guys I have been wanting to do a cummins repower for a long time now with the 5.9L.. I was looking for recommendations on what tractor style would be the best fit for the 5.9... I was thinking a 706 farmall would fit the bill as I've seen plenty of conversion kits for that style. I defintely want to stay with IH.. we are die hard Red fans. Also if anyone knows what year of a 5.9 would be the best for the repower, any input is much appreciated. Thanks for your time

If I was doing it - I'd pick a Cummins with an all mechanical pump. 80s to early 90s. But I'd be using a Cummins 3.9 turbo, not a 5.9. Same basic engine with four cylinders instead of six. 4BDT

You will want a Cummins from the beginning of the first gen Ram production up to the beginning of '98 if you are going with a 6cyl. Those had either the VE mechanical pump or the p7100 pump (in respective order). You can can convert 98.5 - 2002 to a p7100 but that is just more money to add to the project. The blocks are pretty much the same though, just the front timing cover and other stuff that need to be swapped out to convert the VP44 engine to the p7100. Finding a Mechanical setup should be fairly easy though.

I always thought the best part of an IH was their engines ! Why anyone would change one to something else is beyond me ?

Want to do a 5.9 cummins repower then get a Ford or Chevy truck and repower it.

You can buy all the parts to put one in an Oliver from a model 1750 on up. Whites too. It just won't be cheap. Check the archives on the Oliver forum. It's been done plenty of times. You'll even get an idea of the cost.

We have done a 3.9 , two 5.9's and one 8.3 swaps all in Oliver's none in a I H . A change over in a Oliver is a piece of cake and ya don't need any fancy change over kit . Just a type 2 bell housing and a flywheel and ya build your engine mounts. The 8.3 was the toughest of them due to the ft. drive shaft and we had to redesign the oil pan . Had it been a two wheel drive it would have been a drop in deal. Total cost including the tractor came in at around 8250 on that one . Things needed were the flywheel a grand and some misc pieces and parts that would have needed replaced even if we rebuilt the Herc. like the PTo drive and new PTO shaft some hoses and some 3/8th plate and some 1/8th plate for the oil pan . That swap was more cost affective then the rebuild on the herc. But have kicked around the idea of a 3.9 in a Farmall 450 D as here again it would cost less then tryen to rebuild the org. engine that has two cracks in the cylinders and a cracked head then try and find bearings for it . Then we could have a 100 plus Hp. 450 D TURBO .

The VE-pumped ones from 89-93 can be tuned to make the same power on less fuel. I think the 24-valves just need power to the VP44 to run.

You can swap on a timing cover from a 5.9 and put a mechanical pump on a 6.7, too.

Do some measuring you may find it easier to put a B series in a 66 series tractor.
