Farmall A manifold

I recently purchased a Farmall A. When I removed
the hood, I found a hole in the manifold about the
size of a quarter. It is not a rust hole--almost
looks like a casting flaw. Someone tried to patch
it with JB Weld at some time. I would like to weld
a patch over this hole. Does anyone have any
advice or experience patching similar problems. I
want to avoid buying a new manifold. Thank you.

Those IH manifolds can get pricey! Cast is hard to weld for me anyway, and the times I have tried it's usually a rust hole so finding some material thick enough to weld to was an issue. There is some new real hi temp JB Weld type stuff that a few guys I know have had luck with...but ya should be able to find a used one around and just resurface. lotsa those B, A and Cparts tractors around!

You are going to have a lot more holes when you start welding that up. It appears to be pretty thin from what I can see.
Cast iron welding rod will weld it, but you need enough material to take the heat to get started. You might be better off to get someone to braze it.
Just my $0.02 worth!

I know you're trying to avoid buying one, but if you have to hire
someone to weld that up, it may be close to the cost of new.
I bought one for my BN from these guys. $102 with gaskets.

Brazing at best will be a temporary repair. Brazing tends not to work well on things that heat and cool a lot, it degrades the bond between the metals and then it fails.

For a buck and a quarter you can buy a real nice
one right here on this site. You know, the place
you come for all the free
advice,assistance,friendship, etc.etc, Just
saying...

I agree with your sentiment and order quite a few parts from YT.
That place happens to be local to me, so I saved the shipping got
the gaskets included free and had it next day. All for less money.

My Case SC has a brazed metal patch on it that has been there a long time. It was on a flat part of the manifold and was probably an easier repair. That being said, if the adjacent metal is thin, it's probably not worth the effort.

I wouldn't mess with it. Replacements are reasonably priced and the manifold is easy to replace. Start soaking the nuts now so they'll come off easier. Go easy with them, it's faster to cut a nut in two than replace a broken stud.

Changed one on my super c, not a bad job to change. I found out it"s best to tap on the wrench in both directions. I removed all but the last stud probably got in a hurry and pulled to fast and twisted it off. I had to drill out the broke part. Your studs may go into your water jacket, so it"s best to drain, also if a stud unscrews you will need to coat the threads, a real auto parts place will know what can be used.

It has rusted thru and the area around it will also be thin so if you patch yo need a large one. Best advise is get a new one cause if its rusted thereaces. You mite have trouble with a new one as there are some out there not as good as others.

until you can save for a new/used one,
on that hole, I'd drill it round and the right size for a pipe thread tap.
Get some threads started and coat a pipe plug with some exhaust temp sealant, jam it in.
