Newer and older

For both newer and older tractors what would be good for the following?
Plowing
Removing snow
3 point hitch
Pulling a wagon (not a very big one, something I could put a load of 25-50 pumpkins in at a time)
Possibly Loader

Meet SadieMae, my 43 2N
Rototilling is out tho as ground speed is too fast on this tractor

I have a blue book on tractors, it lists all the models and
manufacturers for the past 80 years or so.

You realize there are 1000s and 1000s of thrm.....

So you won't really get a real list. Just too many.

What you want is a dealer somewhat nearby. What is common
in your area. It would be rotten to own an MF tractor here by
me - dealers are over 100 miles away.

Do you want a newer diesel compact traxtor, handy nimble
costs more?

Do you want an older gasoline ag tractor that needs a little
work you can do yourself now and then, costs less?

We all have to compromise on size. I have 7 tractors on my
farm, and still don't always have the right size and options for
what I want to do...

So you need to study your list and see what fits the best.

Sounds like you are moving to a 10 acre lot, and this will
maintain it? 2 horses, you are north enough to get some snow,
you won't ever use this to make a living. You want to enjoy
your time using the tractor, not spend time maintaining and
fixing it?

A compact utility tractor from the last 15 years, about 25-30
hp, would do most of your jobs mostly pretty good. You would
spend about $8000 to $15,000 on such a beast. JD, Ford/New
Holland, and Kubota are the top names all close enough to the
same to just sit on it and see if you like it color doesnt matter.
Dont buy one from China, those from India or Korea are
cheaper but still ok.

If you have more acres, you have different needs, you have
more mechanical skills than you've shown, you prefer an older
tractor from usa, your budget is drastically smaller, then help
us figure out what you need.

Older USA tractors, you need to look at power steering, 3pt,
good hydraulics, enough gears to choose from, live pto. These
are the features you will prefer, or maybe need. The exact
brand or model or size isn't so important as what features you
have to have, which ones you don't need. You have to shop
real careful on machines older than 1955 to find good features,
if that is what you want/need.

Your biggest question from my replies will be, I predict......

'What is live pto?' :)

You were close to being on the right track with the 2010 Deere. But look for a 1020 instead.

I'm not biased.....either a Massey 35 3 cyl diesel or a 135 diesel or
maybe even a Massey 240 diesel if you want something newer....see
not biased, that is three different options!!!.............Sam

New Holland TS 115 A. For snow removal you need a cab, need some power and weight for a loader, and draft control electronics for plowing.

This is our chore tractor.4320
compact JD. 50 HP quick tach on both
ends easy to change tools. Vic

Why don't you just tell us what your budget is and we could help you find a decent tractor.
I've been following your posts here and there could be any of a hundred tractors that would suit your needs.
But untill we have an idea of how much dough you have to spend everything we could suggest is just idle speculation.

That one's not for sale right at the moment. I'm still waiting for the snow to melt, because I'm working on a deal to trade it for a real hard to find Oliver.

I have 7 collector Cockshutts. I would say a 540 would do everything for you. I have had mine for 20 years now and it is very useful with the 658 Cockshutt loader, heavy enough to pull something like a car in the ditch -this I know! , Live pto (Cockshutt invention) , 3 point with live hydraulics and geared slow enough to rototill if you want to. Simple gas Continental engine to work on and parts for it are readily available. about 36 pto hp.

Parts are available through many vendors through the Cockshutt club. See Cockshutt.com. I am just a little biased but oh well!!!

if you are going for older, I would go for a ford, massey ferguson, or ferguson. stay with a wide front and get one with a little size to it if wanting to put on a loader. It's going to cost ya more to get something newer, but any of these modern day compact tractors would be just fine. dont mess with anything that dont have 3-point. Thats almost a must for a garden tractor.

You have listed some very vague requirements. The best answer would be "Yes, a newer or older tractor might work for you".

If you would provide some more details you might get some better answers.

Plowing: 1/8 acre (50 foot x 100 foot), 2 acres or 200 acres?

Budget: $1500 or $45,000?

I have an 06 JD 5103 with 512 loader that I bought new and make
money with. IT HAS TO WORK when I need it.

I could do everything with that 1 tractor, BUT

I have less $$ in my 5 Farmalls, 55 300,54 SH, 53SH,53SC,55 200,
combined that in that new Deere. I have set up a different tractor
for each operation. I maintain 14 acres and garden about 1/2 acre.

I guess I after talking to my wife and seeing what she wanted she is interested in something with a roll bar for safety.
She said we could spend at most $5000 if we could finance somewhere.
We have 2 horses and 5 acres but her parents also live next door with 10 acres. So you could say it would be used on all of that.
We don't need a huge tractor just something that will get our tasks done.
I have lived in the country all of my life and have driven:
Farmalls
Allis Chalmers
John Deere
Massey Ferguson

Just looking for something to get things done.

Find out about the local dealers. If for example, he's 12 miles away but has another store/repair facility and everything goes to the other store so even if a part is in stock you have to drive an extra 45 miles to pick it up or wait until tomorrow it's no good. That's the story with AGCO in this area. JD and CaseIH are both 25 miles but have parts on hand for many things. So here your best pick would be JD or CaseIH/IH/Ford/NH. I really like a couple of the MF utility style tractors but would just about have to get one for free to make it worth my while because of the dealer.

For 5K you can get into a Ford 2000/3000 in most areas with some pocket change left over. Some of the IH tractors would fit that bill too. JD's seem to bring a little more money. If 5K is your limit what about implements? If that included in the 5K or is there an extra budget for that? If you are going to have to get implements out of that 5K you can just about forget a rototiller. They are not cheap. Plus most tractors in that budget will not move slow enough at engine PTO speeds to use the tiller. You can buy or make roll bars for some of the older tractors. On any of the AC's you have to make sure that it stays in gear, all gears, most older tractors transmission gears are NLA. Try each gear, going down hill, wide open throttle. Then jerk the throttle back to idle. If the tranny is bad it will jump out of gear. Can be really bad to free wheel with a loaded wagon behind you.

Check your local CL listings. Here a MF, Ford, JD, White, IH, Case utilities brings top dollar. You can buy an IH 460 or 560 row crop for half the money of any of the post 1960 utilities. So check you options and prices in your local area.

You need to remind your wife that she needs to be submissive and have some concern for your health! A cab contains ROPS, it sheilds you from not just cold in winter but heat in summer, but extremely important is that it shields you from too much sun! It also protects you from dangerous dust! Let her know that to keep her hubby safe that you NEED a cab tractor.

My wife is great about worrying about safety. She definitely thinks about it way more than I do. She is the one who brought all of it up with the roll bars and cabs. I was looking at just about any tractor and then she brought up the roll bar and the cab.
A cab tractor would be awesome.
Unfortunately we will not be able to get something like that for years to come.
My son constantly tells me how much he wants to get a tractor with a cab.
But do to them being more expensive that won't be able to happen right now.
I am tempted to not purchase a tractor this year (like we had planned) and save the money for next year and get something then
