Dodge grain truck engine swap

1967 Dodge 600 grain truck w/ LCF cab. Anyone ever taken the 361 gas engine out and put in the Perkins 6-354 in. Is this a easy job ie do they use the same bell housing, clutch, etc? Both 361 and Perkins 6-354 were factory options. Just wondering, and as always thanks for your help.

As far as switching the engine out there is a lot that will have to be changed. The cross member in the front under the radiator ware the engine bolts down is different, Bell housing, fly wheel clutch are all different as well as the starter. The C series cab also had a different engine cover inside the cab that has to be used with a 6 cylinder engine dew to the engine being longer and sticking into the cab. In other words there are a lot of changes that that will have to be made and don't forget about the rear end needing changed. Mine in 5th Hi axel runs 50 mph down a mountain and right back up it and its screams the hole time!

Finding parts like these for an old Dodge truck , Well lets just say there had to find to say the least. I have a 68 C600 dump truck and 2 parts trucks (C700 and C900 6-71 Detroit) to keep it running and still come up short on parts to fix it at times. If it runs good leave it alone, If it needs an engine find a good 361 to replace it with. Not many 47 year old trucks left to pick parts from. Dodge made some really stout trucks but not to many of them left. Bandit

Forty years ago i could have given ya the answer to this question and all the part numbers to make the swap . even though i was a Chrysler Plymouth parts manager Chrysler thought that since our dealership was just three miles north of and Ohio turnpike exit and every dadgummed broke down motor home always ended up on my door step after the third time of hours on the phone tryen to get parts to get people back on the road they sent me all the parts books on all dodge trucks and motor home chassis along with over 30 grand in parts. Solved the problem of getting travlers going and had a huge income boost for the dealership. Even started selling parts to guys with dodge trucks.

A little FOOD for thought here , what about a 5.9 Cummins , Easy to find with a type 2 bellhousing and clutch set up . One that is set at say 175-210 hp. with the automotive gov. a place just west of me that is a truck salvage yard has a huge supply of Cummins in the 3.9-5.9 and 8.3 . We needed and 8.3 for a swap on and Oliver and we needed a type 2 bell and a constant RPM pump .Went back in the back room looked up on the rack found just what the Dr. ordered , they pulled it down put fuel to it and lit if off and loaded it . We gave 3200 for a vary low hour engine .

Oh and the 361 engine was used in School buses also so if ya can find some old Dodge school busses there is a really good chance that that engine will be in them. Old dust and cobwebs are getting shook loose .

If you are looking for more power or maybe an engine in better condition, a Dodge 440 engine out of a motor home should bolt in. The B engines were 361 383, and 400. The longer stroke RB (Raised Block) engines 413,426 and 440 are all in the same family as the 361. A 440 The truck camshaft in the 361 sould also fit in any 440, but I'd consider having the lobes reground back to specification before installing it. Your 361 crank shaft should fit in a 383 and a 400.

What RPM's do the diesel engine run at compared to the gas engines? If you have to change axle ratios to switch from gas to diesel, it might cost less to just trade trucks.
