planting corn

Would it be possible to buy a bag f corn like people feed to squirrels and run it through a corn sheller then plant it?. Also do I need a planter or can i plant it by hand?

It all depends, my dad planted 1/2 acre of open pollenated corn, just because he wanted to. I think most of that germinated.

Figure on 300 a bag for hybrid seed.

How many acres are you doing?

OK it will be 1/2 to 1 acre I just thought this bag of corn was the cheapest way but did not know how well it would work. I want to do this as cheap as possible. I'm willing to put in all the time neccesary

It will work OK to use it that way.

That is a lot to plant by hand. You might want to see if someone has a 4-6 row that will plant it for you.

Where you located?

that is probably a lot there might be less land then that im not sure how big it is its almost a big garden. im willing to put in the work but that is a lot of shelling

If you're going to shell out a bag of ear corn to plant, you will most certainly need to know what you have.

Most of today's corn will not germinate worth squat. Hybrid and all that good stuff ya know.

300 per bag is really good stuff. did you ask your seed man for cheaper seed corn. most have some called 'blended corn' from last years seed sales, that was overstocked. also have some without roundup gene. a good seed sales guy can help you out.

Thanks I dont really have a seed man my grangmother buys a bag of corn from burkart farm center and she pays less then 50 for a bag that's what I planned on using

My nephew bought a bag of shelled corn at tractor supply for 12bucks. It is sold to feed deer with. He planted a few rows to leave standing for deer to eat. Made better than I would have thought. Had some nice size ears.Don't remember if he fertilized it or not. Its a gamble , if your looking to need a 100 bushels or more better go with a hybrid.

It'll probably do fine, especially with some fertilizer. Just don't let the GMO police know.....

Get some out of the bin. It is called F2, what the old timers used to do all the time. Find a real good ear and shell it to use for seed the next year. It will not be as good as hybrid corn but should make about 2/3s as much.

OK and I just talked to her she got for about five dollars a bag from a farmer. After I took it off I was planing on using to feed chickens

That is what we use to call "bin run corn" Todays modern corn is a hybrid, grown from two separate parent stocks. But the seed it produces is not longer a hybrid. It will make some corn, but not have the vigor, and lots of other desirable traits. But it should make corn.

I go to my farmer friends now that I dont farm, and get their year or two year old left over seed. Just plant it a little thicker. And it is just for deer food plots.

Soybeans are different, their offspring "seed" is the same as the expensive stuff the seed stores sell to the farmers. But if it is GMO, then their is a patent on it and you are not allowed to plant it. (at least commercially) I have two bags of it I got out of my friends grain truck last year. I am planting it for food plots.

The black oil sunflower seed that you get to put in the bird feeder? I produces very well. I use sweet corn plates to plant it in my old John Deere planter.
