Interseeding cover crop

Anybody interseeding a cover crop into your corn?

I attended a Soil Health Workshop last week and it seems like interseeding might have some benefits. Hopefully the Fall Workshop will have a demonstration.

I'm still toying with the idea of interseeding radishes in silage corn at the F6 stage, but can't find someone to answer how they fare with chopper traffic during harvest with a pull type chopper and wagon traffic. And, are the other alternatives (crimson clovers, peas, etc) going to grow and compete with the cornbefore it's harvested?

The speaker said that the interseeded crop really does not affect the corn. I don't know the answer to the chopping/wagon. The rye and clover would not be a problem.

Depending on where you live...plant turnips after you take off the corn silage. Turnip tops make great feed for young weaned calves high in protein and will not bloat. The turnips draw-up nutrients that other wise maybe lost, Cattle will pull the turnips and eat those also.

I read in one of my farm magazines that some farmers are sowing forage radishes in the vheat seed and seeing a 5 to 15 bushel increase in yields.

yep, white clover into standing corn at around the v6 to v8 stage, helps fix nitrogen, holds soil, and builds bio-mass.
