New Holland skid loader hydraulic probems?

I just recently purchased an older LX665 skid loader. It runs great, but I noticed today when I was cleaning corrals that something is going on with the hydraulics. There is no problem lifting, however every once in a while (but NOT all the times) when I tilt the bucket up, it will slowly drop the tilt on the bucket down. Any ideas what is causing this & what needs to be done to fix it?

I'm thinking of 2 possible causes.

The control valve is not always return to center. Is this a foot control model? Check out the linkage for anything loose, packed with mud, binding, etc.

Or the seal is getting weak in the tilt cylinder. If the valve checks out, it's probably the seal. If it is the seal it will probably get worse, be easier to diagnose then.

There might be a ball check valve in that circuit in addition to the regular control valve. The ball may have some foreign material stuck to it that will not allow the ball to seat firmly so it leaks the oil.

We had that design in the forklifts; found one ball that had a piece of metal embedded in the ball. Each time the tilt reached the end of it's stroke, it would momentarily unseat and rotate the ball, allowing it to leak. The purpose of the ball check is to limit the shock when the tilt reaches the end of the stroke; the ball check protects the other hydraulic components from shock damage.

I dunno... I've got an LS170 which is the newer version of your machine. It does that occasionally too. I don't take it to have much wrong. That's a fairly complicated regenerative valve... I'd say if it corrects itself when you push a bit harder on the valve... then don't worry about it. If it's a consistent problem then you get to go fishing.

The cylinder center seal is the first thing I'd question and that can be checked by unhooking one cylinder line and dead heading the valve in the other direction and see if it bypasses when the cylinder is fully extended or retracted depending on which hose you remove... If you get oil from a dead headed cylinder then you have a seal problem in the cylinder. Otherwise, you have a valve problem.
