Corn planting depth

What depth do any of you farmers try to plant corn? some say 1.75 inches and some say at least 3 inches. I do no-till and believe the best depth is where soil temperature is the most consistent.
 
I plant 1-1/2" to 2" in depth. I don't worry about soil temp because I don't plant until the last few days in April to the first week in May. No need to get in a hurry, only want to do the job once.
 
I always planted at 1.5. studies have come out recommending 2.5-3in. I tried it and found no ill affects. planting shallower then 1.5 can lead to big problems! new corn breeding has somewhat eliminated soil temp worries. If you wait until the crop insurance date for planting,
I wouldn't worry at all, especially if planted deep!
 
I would go for the 1.5" unless it is REALLY dry and you are trying to get down to germination moisture.

Bruce it isn't quite that easy. I've been forced to plant into some pretty wet ground that by your standard would dictate that I broadcast the seed on top.
 
Well each to his own. But if the field is that wet you should probably wait till the top dries some. Corn that is planted in wet conditions "mudded in" as a rule will not grow a decent crop. Not looking for an argument here, just giving a "rule of thumb" . Bruce

You are correct, Sir. Every seed agronomist will tell you to "plant to moisture". My 30 yrs in seed corn sales I learned 2 amazing things: 1. Corn will not germinate without moisture. 2. Corn should not be planted in soils with excess moisture. The best & largest corn growers in the nation do not deviate from these 2 rules.

i am in eastern SD i never plant less then 2" deep if its dry i will go to 3' after the plant starts to grow it will only be a matter of a few hours differance in braking out of the ground
 
The issue with mudding in is that the planter creates a tunnel with hard sides that the roots cannot penetrate.

It is best not to do that.
