Grease Worms

I was replacing the ball joints on my dad's old farm truck today, and this reminded me of a saying he had. When he was replacing a universal joint, bearing, or any other thing that obviously failed due to lack of grease, he would say "looks like the grease worms got in it". I lost my dad five years ago in a farm accident, and I had to laugh when I thought of grease worms today.

I know the saying. I just replaced one on my pickup
for the same reason.

Having worked on equipment, with my Dad, all my life I picked up the same saying from him early on. Since then I've replaced many, many parts that had the unfortunate opportunity to meet those grease worms.

I know now days my wife and daughter are always commenting on the sayings I 'come up with' that I got from both my Dad and Grandpa.....and I am both thankful for the opportunity, and proud to carry the sayings on for the next generation.

I think that is a universal description, heard it all my life. But, like NCWayne, my kids and a lot of younger folk get a kick out of hearig those old sayings or descriptions, and I try to keep them alive.

Remember the first time I heard it. A neighbor
stopped in the road in front of our garage. He had
a 48 Chevy, the shocks were bad and he stopped fast
and the old chevy sat there squeaking and rocking.
I was little and I ask why it was squeaking and he
replied I think the Grease worms have got it. After
he left I ask dad what a Grease Worm was.

I remember a few things my dad used to say. It puts a smile on a persons face when you remember them.

We lived near dunes and lake Michigan. Dad didn't want us to go on the dunes or over them to The Lake so he made what looked like shark fins and placed them in the sand and told us not to go near the sharks or they would eat us alive. It worked for awhile. Once we were old enough we would hike the dunes and where there were valleys he said they were made by the Moon bumping into the Earth. We believed that to for awhile too.
