John Deere 40T High Torque Option?

Hi all it's Bryce. I am sure that all of you have seen my John Deere 40T with the single front wheel. I have been doing a little research, and I think I fumbled onto something interesting.

While talking to a buddy of mine who has 2 40T's and a 40S, I began complaining about how slow my 40T is. He asked me how slow it was, here is how I describe it, 3rd gear in this JD is slightly faster than 1st in my Farmall C's. 1st and 2nd are even slower! 4th gear on the other hand, is about 13-15 mph, which with a single front wheel is a little hairy!

He said that his 40T's pull a 2-14 plow in 1st gear, at "just the right speed" I told him that at our local Plow Day, I was having troubles keeping up with everyone, I was in 3rd gear pulling a 2-14 trip plow! If you look at tractor data . com, it will tell you the speeds of an M, but not a 40, the M's aren't the same as mine! ( )

So, now I am intrigued as to why my tractor is "different" another friend of my said that he thought JD offered a High Torque/Creeper transmission for a little while. It would make sense to me if this tractor had that, because I have confirmed that it was special ordered with the single front wheel on it so that it could be used on a Potato farm, so would that be why the trans is geared differently?

I know nothing about the Deere persuasion. I've seen the planters that potato folks used in yesteryear, though. They needed to be slow. Makes sense.

I'd say if it was offered the parts book would show it. I don't have mine handy to look at.
Unless some aftermarket company offered the gears ?
Now on the JD M I have plowed with it in 3rd gear pulling the 2-14 mounted plow. I had to have fluid in the tires for traction. I was at a plow day and had to keep stopping so I didn't run over the bigger tractors ! LOL. It plowed much better at this speed as it shoved the cornstalks thru without plugging.
I was really impressed with that M. I had since drained all the fluid out and added one set of wheel weights and it would not handle that 2 bottom plow without fluid.

Might have a set of crawler gears in it. You could pull the top cover and count the teeth.
