Firewood Cutting Day

I think we can finally get to my timber to cut firewood. We are going to start this afternoon on next winters wood.

What part of the country? We tried to walk into the woods yesterday here in northern Michigan. We did fine when we walked on snowmobile tracks. Once we veered off we sank down 3 feet. Snow is still too deep. My dog got so deep her belly was holding her feet from touching bottom.

We had some 3'-4' drifts, that last round of snow last week, sure piled up thick in places, too deep for the 850 with counterweight, loaded tires and double ring chains. Have a friend needing some wood, he came by yesterday, drove his truck onto the road, eventually got stuck, took some clearing to get him out. I could not get to the woodlot I wanted to cut from, bunch of older dead elm, over the slight shoulder of the road it still 2 feet deep, luckily I found some straggler dead elm in reach. Was glad to help though, his wife turned on him in a vicious way with a divorce, with 2 young kids, money tight due the proceedings, puts him in a real bind, so I was really glad we still got him a few weeks of wood anyway, but it sure is a pain to work in deep snow LOL !

I usually like to cut wood between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but the winter came on fast and hard. I like to have timber frozen up so weeds are dead and do not cut it up.

I start to cut for the next year or the future lets say in April, my favorite month in the woods, still cool, no bugs, and no leaves to hide stuff. Do almost all my firewood in the off (short) fair weather season .

Sure wish I had time to get a building put up, much like a corn crib to keep things dry.

Feb and March have always been my favorite months to make wood....20-30 degree weather, sunny....just a nice time to be out...

This year, with all the snow and bitter cold (40 days below zero with next week just as cold) wood making has just been a thought so far...
