where to get hay seed

i have done some looking around online at places like tractor supply and all they seem to have is regular lawn grass seed, they did have a "pasture seed" that the bag had a picture of a cow on it but it said it only grew to 24 inches tall, i am thinking it is the kind of grass cows eat and not the kind that grows tall and thick enough to bale. so i was wondering where you get grass seed that is tall and thick enough to bale or what it might be called. as a last resort i suppose it would work to go pick the seeds off grass in a ditch somewhere but that doesnt seem very fun lol

You'll have to find a dealer who sells seed, fertilizer and chemicals. It won't be anything like TSC or similar.

I have always bought mine from a dairy farm that had a seed business on the side. If you are going to make hay you should first identify your market so that you can have the right mix for your customers as well as the right mix for your ground. Different grasses perform differently, and you would probably want a legume in there to help with the nitrogen.

Any FS coops near you? Their seed will be matched, clement wise, for your area of the country, not just off the shelf stuff.

Try here.

Located in Eastern Iowa.

Do you know what type of 'hay' grass you want?

Timothy, Orchard, Brome Perennial Rye?

You might want to do a little research to see what's commonly grown in you area, and what works best for what you're feeding it to.

Really helps to have a location on a question like this.

Albert Lea MN is probably a bit far for you, tho they do ship it
gets spendy.

They are on line, and have wide selection of many different
seeds, several pasture or hay mixes for wet or dry ground,
cool or warm season needs, etc. And you can buy different
amounts and make your own mix.

In person or their printed catalog is always easier for me to
sort out than the web site, seed availability and quantiy is kind
of a flexible thing, their web site is nice but not always very
inclusive. They are good on the phone too, smart folks working
there. Long long time family business.

I used tsc pasture mix for half my hay pasture and used a pasture mix from a place in town called Miller Seed. Both have similar with diff. % of tim, orchard, brome, etc, etc, and weed. I really liked the tsc mix esp with the % of timothy made really nice hay.. kinda a blue looking bale..

First off, get something adapted for your area, also check with your local, University experts to find out if there are any sort of fungus or disease problems in your area. If there are, you need to buy disease resistant seed. In areas where Fescue is the predominant grass, they need to use an "Endophyte free" seed. The Endophyte cause all sorts of problems when fed to cattle.

But there should be lots of farm supply places, or individual farmers that raise their own seed and sell it.

Then you need to take a soil sample to see how the fertility and PH is doing, and finally I would suggest planning a year ahead of planting to chemically kill out any existing grass or weeds. You can't just throw seed down in an area with weed problems or existing sod as it will often cause problems getting the new seed established.

Good luck, Gene
