James Thurber

All of the funnies here lately have made me think of James Thurber, who is my favorite humorist/cartoonist. I have a lot of his books and this is one of my favorites of his drawings that I was able to find a copy of online.

I recall a cartoon that possibly was Thurber's---it was his style, anyway. It was set inside a large public library. One stern librarian-type sat at her desk glowering, while in the background another female library worker had her arms wrapped around a male patron's knees, lifting him up to peruse the books on an upper shelf. Two other male patrons stood together at the side, watching. One said, ".....whereas the other one wouldn't give you the time of day!"

Zachary,

My wife is very intelligent. She holds a Masters degree in English Education. She taught honors and advanced placement English in High School for many years and taught English for many years in a university that is part of the Georgia University System.

She has NO mathematical abilities whatever. Numbers are just a mystery to her.

Thurber has a short story entitled, "The Figgerin of Aunt Wilma". It matches my wife perfectly. My children and I have teased my wife for nearly 40 years by referring to her as Aunt Wilma whenever anything mathematical comes up.

I. too. enjoy James Thurber's humor.
