Old,

Saw you were working on a 580b couple days ago;
so, thought you might could give some advice. I'm
in serious looking stage for a hoe to use around
the farm. Found a 580b open station with little
over 3100hrs, good tires and sheetmetal with fair
paint, clean engine and overall, most cylinders
rebuilt and kits for the others onhand. I'm
planning to go look at it Sat morning.

Anything I should look for in particular other
than oil condition, slop in pins etc, overall
power, condition of hoses, etc? Guy's asking 5K,
if all checks out as advertised, is that in the
ballpark?

Any input is much appreciated. Thanks
Carl

If possible operate the machine and check the control valves(spools) for good operation.Make sure that the cylinders are not by passing. Also look at the bucket teeth to see how worn they are, gives an indication of use. Also check out the boom and dipper to make sure they are straight and not been welded up.

The 580B is an older machine but still a pretty good one. Heavy so if you buy it you may find it hard to haul home. Of course check oils and pins etc. Likely the pins will have a lot of slop to them but it is old. Also check the power steering since if it does not work well you have ZERO steering. The 580B also has a 4 speed with a forward/reverse all worked off the clutch. This friend of mine has had this 580B for at least 10 years and I have been fixing it all this time so yep been around it to much. Be sure also the check the fan belt and make sure it is very good because it is a 10 hour job to replace the stupid thing due to having to pull the hyd pump

a 580B can have either a 8 speed mechanical clutch with FWD/REV shuttle or a 4 speed with torque convertor with FWD/REV power shuttle, those hrs if true are low hrs for that unit and if it has been serviced half way on time pins and bushings should be fairly tight if it never seen a grease gun then yes they will be worn, on the trans let it warm up and then test it by pushing in to a bank/ dirt pile ect if possible, try it in 1st 2nd gears this way and make sure it will spin the tires at partial or full throttle, 3rd in this test will not normally spin them but should load the engine and make her smoke, as for the fan belt you do not have to remover the pump just pull the two mounting bolts and pry out on the pump and wedge something behind the pump and the belt can be changed, you will have to remove one piece of side tin to get better access, I can change one in about 10 min, but I have done a few in the last 40 plus years of being around them, look underneath it as well for signs of leakage at the brakes and transmission to convertor bolt up points as this is a sign of them being run with the backhoe mounts loose, this is fixable I have done quite a few but you do have to spilt it to do this repair, again not a bad job to me but to one who has never done it, it will seem very big, the 580B is a very good strong unit and is still very compatible today other than they did not have a 4x4 option good luck if those hrs are true that price seems reasonable to me

I would think for $5K for a B, it would have to be in VERY GOOD shape. I would bet you the tack is broken. I bought a K extend with a cab for $10K. The convertor has been worked on but it is not perfect but I do not use it that much. I am in 2nd gear most of the time. And yes, the tack was broken but it runs and starts good.
