ford truck question

Will be used to haul tractors occasionally - looking at early to mid 90"s Ford with the 460. 125 thousand miles on them. I don"t want diesel - been there done that. I only put 3 to 5 thousand miles a year on truck. Any common issues with the 460 motor of these years? Any transmission issues with the automatics? Thanks

Had a 91 with a 460. Pulled very well. The only trouble I had was when pulling pretty hard (10,000lb) it would crack heads. Took a while to crack the first one but then it became too frequent. Went to a diesel. For pulling heavy I wouldn't go back to gas but apparently you have been there and done that.

The 460 is a lot like the chevy 454 they will give you what you ask but when pushed hard for long periods heads became an issue. Don't abuse it and it will be fine.

50 years ago I drove fur an outfit that had the Ford trucks vith 477 and 534 cubic inch engines, they could pull the top of a mountain off, if yo had money to keep gasoline in them.

The automatics of that era had many warranty issues, The transmission was made in Ohio, the plant was run by idiots. (I went there quite often in the mid-90s)
I personally would make sure that the fluid was changed in the trans, this is important. The transmission was the E4OD. Electronic 4 Speed OverDrive. You also will want to check to see what a rebuilt trans would cost if needed. The trucks with the diesel engines accounted for most of the warranty issues, high torque motor straining the automatic trans.
The Zed-F trans was the manual and that I was told was built like for a tank. (kinda hard to F-up a manual)

I wouldn't be afraid of the 460 because I bought a new one in 97 and it's still with me along with 4x4 and auto trans. It only has 104k but I only use it to tow and haul. One reason is the gas mileage is in the 10-13 range empty. NO major problems.

As others have stated there are some transmission issues. The E4OD has been updated a lot and with the newer parts they are pretty well bulletproof if not abused. Make sure the trans cooler is in good shape and it works. My friend had one with 350,000km on it before the trans gave issues and he hauled a big fifth wheel with it.

I just got a f250 2wd w/ 5.8 and manual last summer. Runs good and pulls ok but could use a bigger engine. I would check it over w/ a fine tooth comb. Mine has nearly 195000 miles on it. The brakes were done shortly before I bought it, and one of the gas tanks was replaced.

I put new ball joints, shocks, radius arm bushings, calipers, brake hoses, parking brake cables, and the rear gas tank. I only paid $1000 for it, but I stuck another $1000+ in it, and most of the labor was done by myself. Some time I'll need to put a new radiator (so new hoses etc... as well) but for now I can wait as I only drive it a few times a month to keep her limber, and the occasional towing.

Any truck in the same age range will probably need the same work done as it's got just as much to do with age as it does miles.

My brother has a 96 extended cab 4x4 with the automatic he bought new. Almost exclusively pulls a 32' fifth wheel since new. It has 100,000 miles on it. Only complaint is the 6-8 mpg towing.
