Chainsaw Question

I posted this in 'Tool Talk" also...While I was clearing fence rows with my tractor....

Last fall I was out clearing some fence rows and came across a Stihl 038 AV chainsaw that I had forgotten and left there for 12 to 13 years ago.

Anyway, I was bored today and wanted to see if I could get this thing to run. When I found it I had soaked the cylinder with ATF to free the piston and rings. Chain and bar were rusted together so I just discarded them.

I have great compression but no spark. Cleaned the flywheel and EI module contact points plus all the grounding contact areas.

All I can think is left is the EI module is bad, (can they go bad?) or a faulty ignition switch.

I'm going to bypass the ignition switch next.

BTW, Plug is good.

Thanks, Greg1959

yes, plenty of them go bad. I found a big Stihl under a huge brushpile one time. Been there in very wet climate at least 5 years. Took it apart, absolutely no salvagable parts. Water had corroded all aluminum, & plastic & metal parts were busted from brushpile being shoved together. Never found out how it got there.

Part of me wants to ask how you could forget something like that, but part of me understands completely. I bet it'll run with a little work.

I'm with you... Part of my can see how I could do it, but I think
when I realized it was missing I would have to go looking for it.
A 038 would be worth a little time spent looking!

You can't bypass the ignition switch. It just grounds the coil in the stop position. You can pull the wire off the switch to make sure the switch is not shorted, which is unlikely.

I sure wish I could find that sealed plastic
55 gallon drum of Pre 1900 Silver Dollars
that I forgot I lost but Now remember I put
in a special Place? That sucker was chuck full.
