Treatment of cattle

I've been takin care of cattle since before I can remember. I've owned some on and off since I was 16. I'm certainly no animal rights person but every time I see something like this deal where the dairy workers are beating a down cow I wonder why we let savages like that live in this country. If she can't get up either help her up or shoot her. No reason at all for that kind of treatment. I've lost animals because of my own stupidity. Who hasn't had rough ole gal hurt herself or lost a calf. But I sure never pounded on them or drug'em to the bone pile alive. When did we lose the little bit of humanity we had left?

I did maintenance work at a 900 head dairy. They shot many of the newborn Jersey bull calves because they figured they weren't worth keeping. Something we would havew never did on our 40 cow dairy. I bought a couple of Jersey steers in the 325-425# range to raise for meat. I payed the upper $.70's for them when colored calves of the same size were bringing $2.25 or more. Nonetheless I think it is a waste and downright sinful to kill them at birth and wish they could be put to better use than that.

These huge operations are sure worried about videotaping or pics of their facilities. Maybe they have more than that to hide? I'd be honored if someone knocked on my door and wanted to video my cows and barns. Hearing about the huge dairies shooting the newborn bull calves makes me sick to my stomach.

Unacceptable. Period. I firmly believe this world would be a better place if those types of sorry excuses for human beings were not part of the picture.

These type of things come down to laziness and ignorant, slothful people, too sorry to take the time and trouble to handle the cow properly and either do something for her or put her down humanely. The management is also to blame if they do not have a policy governing how the animals will be treated and the consequences for violating that policy.

The govenor of Idaho, the state where videos showing cruelty to dairy cattle were taken, is trying to make it a crime to take "whistle blower" videos. He has introduced legislation to make these types of videos "criminal tresspass"!! The dairy industry is big in Idaho.

That would make hunting a lot more interesting, fishing too. I wonder what the fish would use for bait?

On a serious note, there's no need to abuse livestock. Comfortable animals do gain better.

Often, you"ll find that the people shown in those videos are members of the same "animal rights" group that the person doing the recording is, and that they got hired on for the purpose of making those videos.

So many reasons to not abuse cattle i was friends with a person who would not eat meat because of what they had seen on tv however when they seen how i did it they changed there mind .one thing makes me sad is people are starving and they kill calves .i raise and finish jerseys its a niche market but the quality is there .
And one finnal note check out in y tube mike rowe gives a good talk on peta and castarating lambs

The first thing you have to do in any case of a report like this is know the context, who produced the film, when and where it was taken and what other agenda driven reporting is going on in the background. It may be a clear case of animal abuse by morons, or it may be yet another "Tawana Brawly" incident. The news media forms all our opinions these days and any thinking person can understand the power and money behind having the legitimacy of a news report backing their claims. I do not support animal abuse but I also understand the agenda driven reporting that's rampant these days. IOW, it may be genuine abuse or it may be another attempt to shock people into action based on manufactured evidence.

I agree 100% They should be dumped on a cement floor and beaten until they can't get up. Then beaten some more.

There would be more respect for farmers if people knew how much of our time and effort goes to keeping our animals healthy and comfortable. There's no reason or excuse for abusing animals.

I agree also. We just have a few animals in our hobby operation but I pride myself that our cows, pigs and chickens are treated well.

I have not seen the video but have worked ok on a dairy. Cows sometimes need a bit of encouragement to get up. I am assuming the video is made to look worse from the activist standpoint. I would watch it but it gives the activist more "hits" therefore more ammo.

The people who took the video WERE plants. The people abusing the animals were not. The proposed legislation will protect dairys from exposure by anyone. Animals do not have rights. People who keep them have the responsibility of providing them with a life worth living. The proposed law will allow abusers to operate in the dark while everyone else is kept in the dark. Most of the dairy workers don't have the option of getting another job. This anti-whilstle blower law will tie everyones hands.

We brand our cattle here and they sure aren't pets. I understand cattle can't be handled like kittens. But these folks where regular employees, three of them are under prosecution for animal cruelty. I understand the media too (boy DO I) but this kinda garbage is unacceptable. The owners are just as guilty as Paco and Inez for letting it go on. I'd rather see the bull calves destroyed than beating an old girl that's sick because of neglect after she's given 1000's of gallons of milk. Then my tax dollars being spent to give those ba@tards milk subsidy.

If the video is accurate and the animals in the video *are* truly being abused , why shouldn't they get more hits and "more ammo"? Give credit where it's due...

I have a Hawaiian Tee Shirt, it has a buy in a little boat with a fishing pole and a lure on the bottom of the ocean, and on the bottom of the ocean there is a shark with sunglasses on, with a fishing pole and a 6 pack of Budwiser floating right in front of the guys boat. Needless to say, the guy is interested, that shark is not.... :)

I worry about anyone coming onto my farm from a liability standpoint - farms are dangerous places.

HOWEVER:

I would love to have people come see how my animals are doing any and every day. The only ones who have a problem with it are the ones doing something wrong. The reason we farm is because we love the land and we love the animals. Those who don't shouldn't be taking the job.

I agree but what about the abused kids in this country being raised by no count parents. Plus abused spouses (usually wives) beaten by spineless husbands. Now that is sad!
