JD GATOR Transaxle

I have an older (mid 90s?) JD 4x6 diesel Gator

Currently, it is popping out of gear; always uphill, usually under load, only in forward. I tried adjusting the linkage and that helped a little, but not much. I removed the linkage completely and shifted by hand and it still does this. When I shift, there is a loosness that is not to be had on my other Gator. Also, I can notice the shaft that the clutch is on moves in and out a bit. THis does not occur on my other Gator.

I assume a rebuild is required, but the manual does not indicate what is likely to be wrong and therefore, what parts I might need.

I assume. if I am going this far, I should replace the brake discs in the transaxle

There does not seem to be a great deal of difference in transaxles from model to model; can I simply swap tranaxles?

Any constructive thoughts or ideas on this matter will be appreciated.

Yep, its a thought, but I usually ask them last.

One of two things happen when I consult dealers;
1. They do not want to provide information to do it youityourselfers
B. They shrug their shoulders and say they do not know

I'm pretty sure I am taking the transaxle apart. I thought, perhaps, someone else may have been on this journey before and could provide some helpful info. Could be there is a JD mechanic viewing this who might say, "Heck yeah! It's the detent spring on the output shaft, but be sure to replace all the bearings or it's a waste of time."

Replaced a gear in one years ago. Not a really big job, just have to pull the transmission out and disassemble.

Probably so, but it seemed pretty easy with no special tools required. The teeth on the gear I replaced were wore from grinding it into gear. The wear on the gear would cause it to jump out of gear when under pressure.
