Yes. They're fine when you need them. But, suitcase weights were designed for convenient removal. And once installed, that's where they seem to stay!

Bolt the weights together with ready rod, and lift them off with a fork on a loader or bobcat!
Not painless but rapid and more likely done! That thrust bearing might be able to be replaced with a full complement bearing with better load rating. (worth the checking into) Jim

I used to go pulling with a guy who had a bunch of front weights plasma cut from 1" plate. Problem was, he had them weighing 95 lbs. each, and by the time we had changed them around from tractor to tractor a couple of times, we were all tuckered out. I think he eventually had about 25 lbs. cut off the bottom of each, so us old guys could handle them.

The point is, carrying all that weight is hard on the front axle of a 34 yr old tractor.

The last tractor with which I pulled a semi-mounted moldboard plow (4x16) reacted nicely to added front weight when plowing, and to removed weight otherwise. I religiously moved the weights on and off every time the plow was hitched and unhitched.
I solved that work by retiring the moldboard plow!

Loader work's hard on'em too. I broke the bolt off in the brace under the front of the 1600 Ollie the other day.
Took a bunch of cutting, grinding and welding to fix that one up.

The only time we hang iron is for tillage , plowing and ripping . Once that chore is done the iron comes off and is stacked neatly by the barn. we don't need it for discing . The only other time weight gets hung is IF we have to wrap wet bales as the ft. end gets WEEeeeeee bit light when ya get a heavy wet bale on a heavy three point wrapper . Looking at the sky is not fun at all.
