Well so much for the exhaulted superior snow driving abilities of those in the Northern States.
At least the folks in Atlanta parked their cars before they crashed into each other.

Well, the turnpike is in the southern part of the state. And that's only a few miles from the southern states, so I think us yanks are ok on this one.

Depends on who is defining whom as a Yankee. Anyone North of Red River is a Yankee to me

Yes, the Mason-Dixon Line is only a stones throw away from where this occurred and I did hear, believe it or not, that most of the drivers involved in this were from south of the Mason-Dixon Line and were simply trying to get to a place that provided paved highways instead of oxcart roads. (;>))

its not the north or the south its the driver training, my kids have been driving about 10and 12 years now ,but when they went thru drivers ed i was dismayed by how little there actually taught in the class, they can pass the test but thats all, no defencive driving, no skid recovery, no nothing and by now there millions of these people out there driving, they can drive down a dry road most of the time, but add in snow and ice and lots of people and its impossible not to have a pile up. when i went thru drivers ed it was 45 or so years ago, but it took quite awhile, the classes were held at a old airport no longer in use and we had everything, skid recovery was done on the tarmac by watering it with a water truck , we would turn in a large circle probably a couple hundred feet, and accelerate until the car broke loose then recover the car without stopping until we had it completely under control ,before we went out into traffice we praticed hiway speed driving, [ and much faster] on the old runways that training i still use today . we also had to change a tire, guys and gals, and check fluids ect under the hood . its time to train the kids to drive the car, not just pass the test
the best way to reduce accidents is with drivers who dont get into them to start with

glaring blindin sunlite played a very important part ,, according to news ,, it seems road appeared dryand clear ,, traffic rounded a bend ,, sun glare , and cold wind created sneaky black ice that took everyone by surprise,,, one car would wiggle and another wuld go zip , and before long everyonewas wiping out,,Around all the Big Trux that had to bring it all to a stop...

Evidently the guy that shared his theory a couple weeks ago on this board about driving fast over slippery roads so you don"t spent as much time on them, has a lot of like minded drivers (but most of them end up in the ditches and medians.)

Southern PA is is 600 miles south of me. I guess I would call that a southern area as far as winter driving goes.
However, no one is a good driver on ice and accidents can happen on any road. Last fall a big car and truck pile up happened in Florida when a cloud of smoke covered a busy interstate highway. Be safe!

When I took the test for Oregon they asked what do you do if you are caught in skid, my answer was Pray they didn't like that one.

He can't help where he was born. We got him say
"over yonder" now.

The Red runs south to north from the eastern Dakotas and western MN into Canada! Is there a diff... Oh there must be two Red Rivers like the two Clear Lakes. :) Jim

We have had time to reload. I have stood on the spot where the first shot was fired. Ft. Johnson on James Island.

When I worked in Tennessee they teased me about being a Yankee, I informed them we didn't have Rebels and Yankees up North, we had winners and losers, then asked them which one they were? Both daughters were born in the South, then we moved to Wisconsin. The oldest Daughter had a bit of fun with her teachers when they got to Civil War history. She would inform the teacher it wasn't the Civil war "cause that happened in 1776" and that they were now discussing the "war betwixt the states" or the "War of Northern aggression" then would proceed to correct the teacher when the presentation of facts had a northern bias. Some of the teachers did take it well and she was able to bring up some finer points that the text and course of study didn't discuss, like when did Lincoln free the slaves in Maryland? (He didn't, the emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in states that where in revolt). Why wasn't the Emancipation Proclamation unlawful seizure of property? It was deemed constitutional because it only freed slaves in the states that were in rebellion and was justified because the slave labor was being used to provide aid and support to the confederate forces so it was justifiable as a military necessity . Of course this is the child that also got sent to the office for "sassing" a substitute teacher (when asked a question she replied "no Maa'm") took a few of the other teachers to explain she'd started her Education in the public school system in Tennessee and she was the daughter and grand daughter of military officers.

I live in NE PA. when I go to Virginia to visit my brother in law, all I can say is that if it is raining on I-270, 495 or I-95, hang on because people have issues just handlng a litte rain.
