Kaufman Trailers - Utility and Gooseneck Trailers

A bit new to the Trailer industry. Recently laid off and trying a new career path.
Looking for a trailer and see that Kaufman Trailers seems to be the most price efficient for someone like me. Yes, I see that there are other models out there (mostly more expensive) but for what I need it for 1 trip every other week and for some extra income it looks to be the ideal brand to work with.
I actually drove a Kaufman Gooseneck trailer in 2008 and loved it. (It was a 2007 mode Kaufman Gooseneck model.) Would love to know if they're still holding up today, in 2014?

Check out Hull Trailers sold at Stateline trailers dot com.in
Braddyville Iowa. Great products and fantastic prices. Craig Hull and
his wife Mellisa are fantastic to work with. Before you buy check
them out. I have nothing to do with them. I just shopped around
and decided on them and am very glad I did.

I bought a 16 ft two axle bumper hitch from them in 2005. Supposed to be rated for 8,000 lbs but has 3500 lb axles made in china under it. After pulling it 300 miles one wheel was about to fall off. Pulled hub and found nut on axle was cross threaded and no back up washer between nut and bearing. Krapman refused to do any warranty and owner was AHOLE. Trailer was built good except for axles. Will never buy from them again. My opinion. DH

Make sure that it has brakes on both axles, some manufactures cheat and only put brakes on one axle, I got one and wish I had brakes on both axles.

we have a 14000gvw goose tandem axle w/ brakes that
was bought in 2004. We don't use it to hard just to
pull antique tractors around and odd things here
and there. It has set outside most of its life and
we have never had a problem with it.

They have a plant about an hour from me. Boss has one set up for planting. No real troubles yet under a 350 bu seed tender (up front) and 1500 gallon fertilizer tank (over axles) on a 10 ton gooseneck, after 4 or 5 years (used for both corn and wheat). Just have to watch that you get the tender loaded evenly side to side or it will twist til the front corner is dragging on the ground. Imagine that would be a problem on any gooseneck.

I looked into buying one, and by the time you add in the shipping and you need to find a place to unload one, that means a place with a tellahandler lined up, by that time the cost added up to almost the same as going to the local dealer and buying one.

When I was looking for a trailer I looked at half a dozen differant trailers and Kaufman was one of them. I found that all the trailer I looked at with what I wanted on them where all with in $500.00 of each other. I went with a PJ trailer only $300.00 more and didn,t have make trip to the factory to pickup. Also their stock trailers have a wood deck on dove tail and their deck is about 3" higher than a PJ. You will get good service out of any of the well built trailers if you take care of them.

I have an 2001 gooseneck that is still in real good shape. I bought it used about 5 years ago and have had no problems with it. Only use it to haul tractors and hay, it pulls good and the beaver tail lifts to make the bed flat for hauling hay. I think they are good trailer for the price.

There is very little difference in most trailers.
If your looking at a base trailer you'll get spring
suspension, electric brakes and wood deck. There is
little or no difference between axle manufacturers,
just make sure that parts are available locally. So
the only real difference is in the quality of the
craftsmanship. Check the welds to see that they
look good and that the wiring is done well and it
has the ramps and such you want, then go with the
best price from there.

Pete, you need to check on that,VERY VERY few agents know trailers over either 10K or 12K have to have their own Liabilty coverage.Agent may tell you that, but make him get the final ruling from his underwriter.

Farm Bureau Insurance of Indiana covers liabilty through truck ins. I carry an insurance on mine that covers damage if somebody hits it that is without ins.and it cover vandalism and if trailer is stolen.

New Trailer Man, I needed and traded for an 01, 20 + 5 Gooseneck trailer last year. Price was outstanding, it was used by a local feller in the Kaufman Tx. area to haul round bales! It has been pulled a boat load of miles, but not beat up at all. A neighbor of mine looked at it and he is sure it's Base beams are heavier than most Tandem Dually trailers!
My trailer was built in the time frame when Kaufman Trailer Owner was going through a Divorce and Paint was not a high priority!
My trailer is Rusty black! Pi$$ Poor! Only Negative mark on mine. Floor is decent for a trailer that old!
When I bought mine, March of 2012., the owner of my trailer had traded it back in @ Kaufman Trailer on a new one!.... after the original owner of Kaufman finely had to sell the Trailer Company to a new owner.,,, As far as I know the New owner makes just as good a quality of trailer....With better Paint!!!
The only real Negative on older Kaufman trailers is Paint! I wouldn't be scared to buy another old one, or a New one!!! Hope this helps.

(quoted from post at 19:21:18 02/12/14) I'm insured with USAA. My trailers are covered by the insurance on the vehicles I tow them with.
In IL if the tow vehicle is registered to a business or a DBA trailers are only covered if they are included on the commercial policy.

Don't know anything about Kaufman, but if I was in the market for a quality trailer I'd look at Behnke (B and B) trailers.

I have a tag a long Behnke dump trailer. Racked up a lot of miles with it in the 9+ years I've owned it and wouldn't consider buying any type of open trailer without looking at what Behnke offers. I looked at a lot of different brands before I bought. None came close to Behnke in quality and attention to detail. PJ was probably the closest, and they weren't even in the same league.

I had or have Ins.on all my trailers(6)too,but this Liabilty not following the truck thing showed up about 15 yrs.ago after a Ins.underwriter spoke at a farm meeting.90-95%of agents will you what you said, but make them call their underwriter and put in writing to that effect.5 of the 6 have the coverage on them.

USAA doesn't have agents. Everything is done through the home office in San Antonio, TX. I called the home office and was assured that my trailers are covered under my vehicle policy.

I think that may vary by state, but yes, call your agent and have them call the company. My agent wasn't aware that commercial policies didn't cover liability on trailers unless they were on the policy.
