Bud Skalla was 92 when he died and was never married. He left farm land worth 3 million to his
parish. He also left money to churches in 13 towns worth 10 million. Hal

i saw that on the news. they said he was a very quiet and reserved fellow that kept to himself. sad part was at the end of the news report, the churches couldnt wait to sell the farmland off and spend the money. i think it would have been better long term to keep the property and rent it out. they would have had a long term income source.

The Montgomery gentry song "Where I come from" comes to mind. "That old man right there in the rocking chair
At the courthouse square I'll tell you now
He could buy your fancy car with hundred dollar bills
Don't let those faded overalls fool ya
He made his million without one day of schoolin'.

I have found in life the people that act like they have money often don't, and the people that live a low key life often have the funds.
My wife is an accountant and its interesting to hear the stories... Husband and wife are doctors and have a combined income of 500k, but they are broke and have no cash cause they bought a million dollar home. The next guy has a used furniture business, lives in a modest house and makes 300k a year. Employees family members and pays them all really well.
Life isn't always what it appears...

I would not have called him a wealthy man.....I have little to no money at times, but I do have a wife and three children.......?????
And then of course, I have all you guys to spend my spare time with!!!!!!!..............

To each their own, and a mans property is his to do with as he wishes.....but to me that is a shame. As said below, the church is already wanting to sell the property and spend the cash.

This could have been a hell of a opportunity to get a young guy started.....after all, it would have made ZERO difference to the guy who passed....and likely would have made a greater impact on the world than giving it to the church.

I have watched something similar happen real close to home....again, his to do with as he wants but now it is gone to the wind. It wont mean nearly to that church what it would have to a guy trying to get started.

oh well......"people are crazy"

same thing in our neighborhood old guy never traveled much very few ever visited him renter did he got one farm i did got his truck and son and grandson didnt but each got a farm couldnt wait to sell them. they to could have made money renting but the saddest part it was a distant cousin who thanked us for looking after him the son and grandson are mad because they didnt get it all.
one funny thing happened he wanted to be cremated and ashes spread on the farm he picked a beautifull spot a ravine next to a stream with lilacs now anthor word for ravine is ditch and the guy who got the farm was in charge of sprinkling the ashes so one day i asked why is it a guy gives you a farm and you throw him in the ditch? good thing he has a seence of humor and ill bet there somebody in heavon with a smile

It is his money, he wanted to leave it to the church. He did not have any family, so maybe the church provided that for him.

I would not agree that it would be good to leave it to a farmer getting started, they do not need to start with Daddy's money, they need to do it themselves.

It does show how much a family costs.

Well it may cost a lot to be married but i lost my wife of 47 years, 2 years ago and i can tell you that its no fun being alone .thank God we had 2 kids and 4 grandkids or i don;t know what i would do and it helps to have a hobby like old tractors

You know Glennster, it"s sad to hear that they are wanting to sell the property on the gitgo, but having been closely associated with the inner workings of the modern church, I"ll guarantee that it was the only way to avoid a ruckus. How many people in that church would be fighting for the rights to farm that property? Simple solution? Sell it all and get the argument out of the church.

In one of the books he authored, Bill Veeck wrote that when you give a gift, you should give it freely with no strings or expectations.

Churches are in "business" to teach about God, not to operate farms.

thinking on this and the responces makes me happy with my choice i have one nephew and he tried but made some bad choices and lost it but he tried and im proud that he did that my niece is successfull in her life there not close either . so the choice i made was a girl thats close has kids made a successfull career as a nurse ( one nice plus she knows what a person needs as medical issues and not afraid of docs so when its time to go i can) but would love to farm she has kids that someday might be interested and now my challange is to leave it in good shape to pass it on and leave it out of the coperate world and stay in the small family farms

Hi
i got A farm related job and trying to start farming a bit to keep the family history alive. I would of loved that opportunity from the guy.

Not everybody was born with Daddys silver spoon, all I get is the empty money teat, unless it"s a real emergency! or maybe a hand when I need it. If i"m super busy with other work. That only being if dads not to busy being retired.

I'm with you Kent, I have been alone for four years now, and were it not for my kids I would probably be on the funny farm. I would much prefer being broke and trying to support a family to stashing it away somewhere. You can't buy your way through them gates!

Sam, wealth depends on how you are seen by others. For example, by comparison, to me, you are wealthy in the fact that you have a wife and three children, and when you are long gone, your progeny will carry on your lineage. On the other hand, I have out-lived two wives and all seven of my children and my lineage dates all the way back to the 12th Century there in England. I'm THE LAST DINOSAUR.

Doc

If the farm was worth 3 million dollars. Depending on where it is , it might not be a lot of acres. Could be a nice start if there is other land available to rent.Around here it would be 2-3 hundred acres.

This article gives some info.

Churches were the foundation of the modern business world. Churches, monasteries, and convents taught early farmers how to farm and were usually among the first to settle in new territories. What do you think they did in all those Spanish missions (like the Alamo)? They were also the source for clothing, craft goods and fine art.

I would not leave a turd to the church.

I know of 2 guys ,never married, one owned the big coulee ranch in southern Alberta.
Other guy owned 3 dairy's in ontario.
They both left the entire operations, lock stock and barrel to their 2 longtime hired hands when they died.
Made 2 guys very happy.

Doc, I mean that my wife and 3 children make me more wealthy than that man......As you say I have something to carry on where I leave off!

They said it was 292 acres.Sold everything out at auction and netted 10 million.

Hope I am correct with my facts.

Our Daughter made that choice in 1975 to become a nurse. She did that at the local Community College with an AA degree in nursing. A few years later she got her BS in nursing. She then went to Johns Hopkins for a master's in public health and we had to support her since they told her she couldn't keep up with the work load.

A few years later she earned a Master's in nursing from Maryland and then she became a Nurse Practitioner from Maryland. She's in the GS-15 pay category. She never married or had any kids.
She has her own home near where she works. Hal
PS: She was born at FT Bragg while I was in the Army in 1954. Here's a picture of her and her mom.
