Hydrostatic oil vs hydraulic trans oil

Would there be any damage if I use hydraulic trans oil in a hydrostatic system??

Any advice would be appreciated. THANKS

Hydrostatic transmissions are NOT tolerant of incorrect oil or neglected maintenance.

They are also expensive to repair.

Use what the manufacturer recommends and change it (and the filter) regularly.

There is an all purpose oil for hydro and regular trannys that is sold by NAPA. John Deere sells an oil for hydro and I think but am not sure, that they call it ultra thin trans/hydra oil.

John Deere used to sell Hydrostatic Fluid which was Type F automatic transmission fluid. They now recommend Low Viscosity Hy-Gard. Mike

Check the specs of the oil against manufacture required. Brand doesn't matter. Always check the specification, always.

My branson is gear drive but has an independent FR shuttle function. I don't know if any hs functionality is part of that or not. Steering is hydrostatic. Owners manual specs the premium grade of multi-function hydraulic fluid like the J20C spec for example. TSC premium hyd fluid is multifunction and meets the specs.

First of all, I've never heard of "hydroSTATIC oil."

IH hydro systems all use HyTran, from the Cub Cadets all the way up to the 3488, for example.

Check the specification of the oil your "hydrostatic transmission" requires. If the "hydraulic oil" you want to use meets the spec, then it is OK to use.

The specification is pretty common these days. Hytran and Hygard meet the same MS 1209 specification, and are by and large the same, and compatible for example. I know it irks the Deere and IH hotheads to no end to hear that, but it's true.

Case skidsteers use hytran plus you treat with a a zinc phosphate (ZPPD) antiwear additive that they also sell in quarts (real expensive). I treat all hydraulic systems particularly hydrostatic transmissions with this additive unless the compartments contain clutch or brake material. Then it becomes a little more delicate. Does a great job in quieting down pump/motor whine and I'm sure it will extend life.

not really sure what you are getting at but, automatic trans. oil does not have the proper lubricating qualities as hydraulic oil. this is in piston pumps on a hyd. unit. hy-tran is not required either. just a good hydraulic oil. have tried the auto trans. in a few units at work and those units , the pumps didn't last as long.
