Olympic women's figure skating.

I'm amazed at what people can do, when sometimes I feel like I can't do anything...

I slipped and fell on the ice just walking from the shop to the house.

I'm watching the young ladies skating backwards at break neck speeds, then leap up in the air and grab their ankles spinning in circles. I saw one fall down, but she got back up and kept on skating.

When I fell down, I was down for at least 5 minutes, and I definitely didn't spring back up. I got a heat pack on my knee right now.

Watching it here too. Notice how a lady falls and gets better score then the one from U.S. that had a couple bobbles but didn't fall?
Will say the 15 yo girl from Russia was real good.

Indeed...

I'm not sure if these girls do anything else in life aside from skate. I never could do just one thing that much, to get that good. That, and I would look terrible in a little sparkling dress...

They do all that, and then in 4 years, or 8 years, they are all but forgotten... Aside from these incredible pictures.

I know this may sound crazy but you need to ice your knee, no more than 10 minutes at a time. it'll hold the swelling down, it's my understanding that heat increases the blood flow to the affected area causing more swelling and that makes it longer to heal. Heat is for the longer chronic pain. John

i hear ya. i went down hard on my knee awhile back and couldnt get around very good for about 3 days. still a little tender. i've seen those skaters fall before, but i think they just hit a slick spot once in awhile.

Not a figure skater, but the stories of some of those
athletes are truly inspiring.

Just the other day I was reading about 1960 Olympic
champion Wilma Rudolph, "The Tornado, the fastest woman
on earth". Polio at age four. Gave up her leg brace at age
twelve. The fastest woman in the world.....The human
spirit is truly amazing.

Glenn F.

And how about the 'Kansas Flyer', distance-runner Glenn Cunningham? Terribly burned as a child, doctors recommended amputation of both legs. Went on to set records in distance races. Was Jesse Owens' roommate at the 1936 Olympics.

(quoted from post at 08:31:15 02/09/14) I don't know. You might try it, the dress I mean.:)

No matter how hard I try, I will never be able to get into a figure skater's dress... I couldn't get into their pants, either.

Years back was at a family get together and was in a room full of people, men and women watching a hockey game, the Blackhawks and Red Wings. Everyone was seriously into the game. For some reason my oldest sister walked in and changed the channel to figure skating, and she didn't do it as a joke. She was serious. She barely made it out of the room alive, and she never tried that again. If it involve skates, it better include a puck.

I almost said something about tearing it up, but I realized it could be misconstrued...

I was thinking of the gouges, ruts, and holes the figure skaters leave in the ice. The arena staff have to fill the worst damage with slush. Then flood the ice at least twice.

(quoted from post at 19:58:57 02/09/14) I wouldn't bother, most of them seem to look like a long-haired 12 yr old boy in a dress.

 Just exactly how many 12 year old boys in dresses have you seen?

Completely off that note, and more as a general commentary:

Not to be misconstrued or label as something undesirable, but for once, in this world of trash, PC police, misplaced rage, and rampant over-zealousness concerning feminism, and all "Causes" in general; it is nice to see young talented ladies being feminine and graceful.

There was a time when mothers would use the term "lady-like." It wasn't uncommon to hear someone say "that's not very lady-like." You don't hear that anymore. All I ever see are tattoos, baggy jeans, lots of body piercings, dark make-up and girls with half shaved heads dancing like something you'd see on a pole in the bad part of town. And that's on the dang music award shows!

Sure, these skaters wear heavy stage make-up that works better for a live showing, and not HD-TV on a 52 inch screen. However, you don't see anything incredibly rau_nchy or sloppy. No matter what they do or how they act out of the rink, for that short time, you get to see someone beautiful, do something beautifully and gracefully.

I guess it's not what most think. When you sit down an examine what it really is; it is turning a human body into a piece of artwork. It's the same thing others see in a tractor, in their style, and their appearance. Even junk piled high, or a rusty weather beaten object can possess the same type of art form. (and now it is tractor related! see how I pulled that one around? LOL )

I know what you were talking about, and I was just trying to avoid the post where I contested that I could do more damage to the ice, and then have to face the inevitable reply by a random user about a fat man wearing a dress and tearing up the ice. I have no intentions of entering women's figure skating.

I haven't seen any that I know of, but that's about the shape most of these skinny-minnie hipless wonders have. Not saying they aren't doing something admirable, skating just doesn't interest me.
