massey 3165

looking at this tractor to buy Massey Ferguson 3165 it has gas engine 2wd shuttle shift with loader .wondering if anyone knows of problems with this tractor and what is a good price thanks for information

3165 is an industrial version of the old 165.The 165s were great smaller/mid size tractors with great fuel economy.Other than that I know little. Is this tractor already for sale at a dealer or private party?Or you going to the present owner with a 'cold' offer to buy it?As far as value, thats a hard question to answer.Need pics and more info.Look on Tractor House to get an idea of dealer priceing.Steve

Ken, As DeltaRed said, 3165 is 165 only yellow Industrial model. The 165 was great tractor. Three things to check. Some Industrial models did not have three point hitch. Also I believe some Industrial models may not have live P.T.O. There were two gas engines in gas 165's. Early models had Continental 176 cu. in engine. Later models had Perkins gas 212 cu. in. engine. Both good engines but Perkins stronger and more powerful.

Good luck, Bill

It's NOT a 3165 if it's a 3 cylinder! I would guess it's a newer MF20 or an MF40 if it has a "hard nose". 3 cylinder engines could only be Perkins. Post a pic. if you can but definitely not a 3165 with only a 3 cylinder engine.

Should add it would have the drive train of a 135 except for the shuttle shift and heavier front axle. Very good tractors. 40 is a more HD model. Hard to give a price without seeing it or hearing it run but could be $4000/$5000 or more if in real good shape. The 3 cylinder Perkins gas is a very HD engine as it shares a lot of components with it's more popular diesel brother.

Ken, Tractor Data , if correct, lists only the Continental 4 cyl gas engine was used in 3165. Tractor Data says SN info not available.

Now, if, and this is a big IF, your SN follows the 165 SN INFO THEN YOUR 3165 MAY BE A 1966 MODEL. No guarantee, just following how Manufacturers USUALLY list their SN's !

Continental was a good reliable engine. So if runs good and appears to be well maintained I personally would not let that be a hinderance. I would want three point hitch and live PTO for ag use however so be sure and check that out if important to you also. If it doesn't matter to you it still would affect resale after you are done with it.

Another personal comment. If I bought it and it is yellow the first thing I would do is paint it red and grey ! ☺
