Wife's adventure

Wife came home a started complaining about how she had such a hard time getting to her mothers house. Not due to snow but because of police at every intersection. Roads closed. She said she finally found a way in that they didn't have blocked off and soon as she got in the house a black Escalade pulled in the drive and just sat the for 10 minutes. Finally left only to come back a few minutes later. They didn't get out but she was nervous until they finally left for the last time.

I laughed at her and said she just got checked out by the Secret Service. And she's lucky she didn't come up missing. You see her mother's house is one mile north of the Lansing Michigan airport and this is when "O" was in town to sign the farm bill. I'm glad I didn't need to be in Lansing.

Tuesday I saw the biggest plane I've ever seen at the airport. It was a navy cargo plane, I assume to drop off the "Limo" and other support vehicles.

I saw that same plane when O came by to speak locally, I'm on a hill and can see the air traffic in most directions, came from the DC direction, that is one huge cargo plane for sure.

I remember when Clinton or Bush would come into NYC, just screws up everything on the surface, head down into the subway, same thing, total gridlock, trains mobbed with people. On one of these occasions I ran into a television actor from the late night series MAD TV, rode the same car, I could not tell at first, people look a little different in person so I actually asked her, said I enjoyed the show, then left her alone so as not to be a nuisance. I did like that show, was good clean humor. I never really figured those people used mass transit, but that's all you have when its gridlock up top.

Pilots here in the Pontiac area routinely get into trouble violating Temporary Flight Restrictions when the president or presidential candidates visit Detroit. During campaign season, TFRs are an almost daily event here.

Anyone else ever read this stuff and think to themselves, "Man, if I was Prez I'd do it different!" I understand the security thing, but for me it start right off the bat after the election- no big parties, no huge events, none of that stuff. Do it Cal Coolidge style, low key, respectful of the people you serve. Things like Clinton tying up air space and all flights int he area for a couple hours while he got a haircut, stuff like that, is so over the top.

If zero was around maybe she got lucky and it was just the Secret Service and not the IRS.

I once had to stop and wait on my walk to work on the campus of Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State Univ) for President Johnson's motorcade to pass. Only 3 cars and he had the back window down waving to us. He spoke at my graduation in '68. There were Secret Service all around the stadium including in the restroom,, probably the newbies on that duty.

The boy works right down on Grand River by the airport. I haven't talked to him. Don't know if they put them on lockdown or not. lol

When I was working for ABX Air out at the Cedar Rapids airport it was a big ordeal when the prez came to town . City will line all the fences and gates to the ramp with trucks , loaders etc. Secret service would take over my office. They would be there week before the visit and have banks of radios and walkie talkies set up along one wall chest high . Couple tables set up with 6-8 phones. all the phones were labeled . One said "Direct white house line " . Walkie talkies all had nicknames on them. Always wanted to pic up one of those phones and try to order a pizza ,lol. Outside day of visit they had snipers everywhere. We were told not to come in to work unless we had to . They kept shop overhead doors closed . We had one entry door they said we could watch from ,but not go outside. We would see a red laser dot bouncing around from time to time .

It's not just POTUS.The wife was flying back from London on B.A. on a 747 into JFK. I met her at customs .She said she had the entire acft.to herself other than flight attendants .BUT after landing and while taxiing to the terminal the acft. stopped on a taxiway and she saw a limo roll up to pickup or dropoff someone. She had a bad angle and couldn't see who or what. That flight had to cost B. A. some money!

If Carter is the alternative, lets have parties instead. Reagan liked the good life and Nancy insisted upon all the trappings.

Jon was just here. He said they weren't under lockdown but the Post Office was. He said a guy he knew got pulled over and told he couldn't go down the street he was trying to go down. He said they saw the C 130 on the ground and watched it take off.

I was on DeWitt rd at the east end of the runway and was going to turn around for a pic but it took off by the time I got back. Saw it take off though. In-laws is one mile north of the runway on DeWitt Rd. I saw the plane as I pulled out of their driveway and went for a look.
I don't know the military planes but it was like a scene out of JAG seeing it.

I rememeber several years ago Jimmy Carter said If I travel overseas Secret Service protection is fine but I dont need it here, it is a waste of taxpayer money.

(quoted from post at 11:29:09 02/08/14) Jimmy Carter also pardoned the Draft dodgers. Go figure
That and to give away the Panama Cannel was the only two things he did while in office. Totally worthless.

I'm pretty sure the Navy doesn't have cargo planes. It was probably an Air Force C-17, maybe a C-5, but I think the C-5's are all retired.

Wife and I were driving across Detroit on I94 about 2 weeks ago. There was a Border Patrol or Police vehicle on every overpass. That was the day nnalert came to bless the auto show with his presence. Wonder how much that visit cost all of us. A cost evaluation of the knowledge he gained from his visit would show a negative number.

Ok I confirmed it, it was a Air-force C-17. The plane I saw was dark gray and had no writing I could see. There was something on the tail but I couldn't make it out Looked like an insignia of some kind.

From a Google search:

Operations and Presidential Escort

The C-17 Globemaster III has been used extensively around the world since it first entered service. The aircraft is currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and is used to distribute humanitarian aid to foreign countries in crisis. A C-17 aircraft accompanies the U.S. president on all domestic and foreign trips – no matter what the occasion. The aircraft is used to carry the presidential limousine and security detachments.

I dunno about that... We share a runway with a major airbase and we still see an occassional C5 coming and going. ....and yes I do know the difference between the two planes after nearly 30 years in the aviation business where one of the planes mentioned is our product.

(quoted from post at 08:12:43 02/08/14) Like Jimmie Carter with no inauguration parties, and walking from Capitol to White House?

NO! NOTHING like Carter! Just saying, there's no need to be KING, you SERVE the taxpayers.

Bush Sr. walked to the WH too.

A friend's son is on the crew of the Air Force cargo 'plane that hauls the presidents helicopter around. I think that there is considerably more than one cargo plane following him around.
