John Deere #71 Flex Row Unit

There is an auction tomorrow that is selling some 71 row units. These units are mounted on a toolbar behind no-till coulters to plant soybeans. How difficult is it to change the units over to corn? I notice that the parts catalog talks about "corn cutoff components". Do these units require special parts to plant corn, or does a guy just change sprockets and plates?

Thanks!!

I think you should be able to just put corn plates in and go. Seems like if it was planting 60 lb. of beans would plant 20000 corn with 24 cell plastic.

we had a 4 row planter for a while in the Late 70's that was this type. Used it for both corn and beans just changed the plates and adjusted rate.

The cutoff components mentioned are for singulation. If I remember right there was a spring loaded jaw and wheel that knocked off doubles and singles.

Pretty much the same mechanism used from the 290/490 through the plate version of the 7200/7300.

Changing rate on 71's need to be done on each row. There should be a fair stack of sprockets for this.

I have and use several of these units. If you are planting sweat corn in a garden they will work fine. If you are planting field corn they will not work well. Feild corn now comes in varying sizes, these are plated planters and you cannot geta consistent spacing/stand.

They workwell for most anything else. I have planted soybeans, cucumbers, butter beans, peas, cantaloupes, watermelons nd other things with them.

You can and I still do buy 'graded seed.True it is not graded as it used to be.You just have to be aware and check more carefully than you used to.I still use an older #70 unit(6x30) to plant around 80 acres yearly.True, the stand wasnt as perfect as the maximerge, but was quite adequet. In the end ,the 'yeilds' were the same as my neighbors.I know this because we planted the same field together-side by side.I have another friend who still uses a #70.His yeilds are right up there with the 'big boys' and their plateless jobs.
