John Deere 2950

I am looking at 2950 John Deere cab tractor. It has John Deere 730 self leveling loader on it. It is a clean low hour tractor. Good rubber all around ,2 wheel drive . I am not familiar with these tractors at all . Would like opinions ,good points and bad points and in particular what all to look for on this tractor. Doctor told me I better get out of the sun . So I figured this was the best way I raise beef cattle on a small scale ,so something for mowing hay and baling. Thank in advance for your input . Joe Daugherty

Used one for several years baling and cutting hay. Didn't have a problem at all with it other than normal maintenance.

You might get a better response posting on the John Deere board.

Good tractor but the hydrolics make them mean to use with a loader or a roll baler. The pump in the transmission is on the clutch so you must shift to neutral and let the clutch out to keep the oil flowing to the front pump.

Transmission pump WILL continue to run with the clutch down....you have to go back a few series to have that issue.
Nice working chore tractor. Is the loader set up to run with a joystick?

I agree with Tech 7. I'd suggest to test hyd's after attaining operating temperature. If owner will agree I'd inspect hyd filter and check coolant PH. If tractor has hyd hi-lo I'd suggest to check hyd's in both high & low. Downside is tractor has a dry traction clutch that has a master/slave cylinder for operation that's difficult to bleed the air out of if it ever requires bleeding.

Sorry that was a 2940 we had. We spent a lot of money on that 2940, very disappointed with it and never bought another John Deere.

Take this for what it's worth. My brother inquired about a 2955 on here last fall. It was a mfwd with a loader and just under 10,000 hours. All responses indicated to walk away, which he did. Fast forward to January, and a local fellow ended up buying the very same tractor. Upon purchase, it was discovered the hi-low was out of the transmission ($4,000+ repair). If this one is lower houred, may be fine, but I'd sure check that part out as it seems to be one of their weak points.

Ain't so

It's the syncro trans 4020 as one example that does stop the trans pump.
The Dubuques and Mannheims do work much better if the loader is on a joystick. And the joystick is direct plumbed to the scv supply line and to a ported trans filter cover. Instead of using an SCV.

I own a 2950 and a 3150 wich is just a size or two bigger. Both FWD larger one with a cab. Very good starting tractors when cold. I plug them in below 20. Pretty good on fuel, I put a fair amount of hours on mine and work them like I bought them to be used. wiring isnt as good as it could be, but I would buy another if the price was right. believe me, we work them hard, and they are the tractors my WIFE likes to drive best.

Trans pump on a JD 2940 is driven very similar to a 2950. If you had hyd problems with a 2940 it was more involved than just depressing traction clutch pedal.
