Hey guys, what are your opinions on an IH 1086? I know the TA is an issue with most IH tractors, but is there anything else to look for? I'm looking at one with a IH loader, mostly for tillage and haying. I had a 786 that I liked pretty good. Thanks in advance

If its priced well buy it! Cant go wrong! yea not convient as comfortable as a new one! But it will get the job done! Yea some people say the shifting sucks or the hydraulics are slowed compared to.other breeds shifting is decent if you keep tranny brake adjusted up good! Let a mouse chew some wires in a new john deere and then tell me how you like its shifting! Never seen a mouse chew metal linkages if you have id say you have bigger problems than a 86 series shifting! All depends if the operator wants to run it or wants to bash it! I feel thier good old tractors!

Anymore they aren't a big tractor, but I thought we were in tall cotton when we got one. I was in heaven.

We didn't have it as long as the 856 or 966 but it did very well for us. Ours was bone stock not turned up. The cab was like nothing I had ever seen - very comfortable and well insulated. Compared to today's cabs it may not be the best, but I like it as much as the 4440 I am in now. You won't be disappointed. It will make a good haying machine and loader tractor. As long as it has been treated well, that is.

Come to think of it, I think the air conditioner was a puzzler for some reason.

I think they are good tractors. I still work mine pretty steady spring and fall in spite of having a couple newer, front assist tractors around. It's only summer job is pulling the Vee rake, Kinda overkill on a rake ! It will run our round baler with power to spare. I personally think it would be a lousy loader tractor. My 7060 Allis is a better loader tractor but only because it has the power shift trans. The only problems iv'e ever had with the A/C or heater was a blower motor and one compressor. Mine still has the old York type and they are well known to loose some refrigerant through the shaft seal and need topped off in early summer. Never had a problem with the TA either (knock on wood) but shift it like your drag racing.

What Brian 806 said pretty well sums it up. Good tractor for it's time and still a good tractor. I do have a Westendorf loader on my 1086 and it's not all that bad of a loader tractor. Not as handy as others, but with the forward cab and short hood the visibility for loader work is pretty good, not that you ever plan to use it with a loader. Jim

a very good engine but the ta, speed/range trans and final drive is far from bullet proof if worked hard, backwards doors and a shift lever in your butt when entering the cab, yes they have and will do alot of work but there is better more convenient tractors out there and I won't compete with you on buying an 86 series, as far as the trans brake adjusting doesn't do any good when the glue lets loose and the pad is laying in the bottom of the trans-I have seen several that were
