Best Anti-Virus?

New computer arrives in the next hour or so. Wondering what the prevailing thought is on AV software? I was with AOL for a long time and they had good protection. I signed up with them when they started WAY back and never had a virus. BUT, I have cancelled them and need something I can rely on. Any opinions respected.

I get by just fine with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, both of which are FREE FREE FREE!

i run avast, superanti spyware and malware bytes. all free software. neighbors son-in law is a puter guru, and thats what he recommends,. he goes to a site called ninite dot com and downloads the software. the site is designed so you select whatever free software they have available, bundle it for you and do a batch download. works really well.

I run Norton 360 for about $50 I think it was I got to download it to 3 computers for a year.

I paid for Bitdefender and its an award winning program, I am very happy with the results which is, no problems..

^This. I'm posting from a computer with Ubuntu on it, a Linux variant. I'm guessing it's 8+ years old and it was a $298 Compaq from WalMart. It it much faster than my Windows 7 computer that's only a couple of years old. Updates are free and the chances of a virus are much less than the Windows 7 machine, where I've probably taken off over a half a dozen viruses, even with virus protection.

Okay, but do a little research when running MSE. Compared to the competition, it is the worst you can have and even Microsoft has admitted that it has many problems with little protection.

I think it's Norton and Symantec, you're more susceptible to getting something you don't want, because they are so common they get the most attention from hackers.

I have AVG and run their tune-up occasionally. The windows defragmenting program said I was in good shape, then the AVG spent an hour working on it.

Malwarebytes also found a few things. They recommend getting offline and shutting down antivirus before running it. Apparently some antivirus software has bugs in it and hides it from other programs.

If you want a free one and why wouldn't you the experts say avast is the best. If you are going to buy one they say Kaperski is teh best. If I was on my home computer I would give you the link to the testing.

Yep! I had been buying norton for many years and the pricier it got the worse my computer worked. I switched and never looked back! didn't have to, none of the former problems came back. been using it three years now, very pleased. chuck.

If you run a browser other than IE, like Firefox for instance, you solve a lot of problems. Stay away from porn sites and gaming sites and that helps a lot too. I run AVG free and have few issues.

Me too! Norton caused me more problems than it fixed. I think I've tried most of the common ones. Now, they're all removed and I only have the two above installed and it's been that way for 3 years or so. No issues at all. And, one of my computers is online probably 12 hours a day, between me, the wife, daughter and 3 grandkids!
