Tapping a hole question.

Repairing tractor's air seat. Had a bracket that was only spot welded fail out of warranty and mess things up.

Going back together and the fitting on top of the air bag is a swivel tee with 1/8 inch pipe threads going into the top of the bag. Threads are bad enough to not tighten up properly.

I am going to try to upgrade to 1/4 threads for a new tee before I buy a new bag.

The top of the bag is plastic or nylon. Any special advice about how to drill and tap the new hole? I know to not run the tap in too far.

How about cleaning up the existing threads of any sealant, oil, or debris, slathering some epoxy on the threads and snugging it up and letting it cure?

When I am tapping something fussy I like to do it in a drill press. Drill the hole and then without moving anything take the drill bit out and replace it with a small center punch. I put the point of the punch in the pilot hole in the tap to hold it straight. I hold just a little tension on the tap to keep the punch in the pilot hole until the tap is started about 4 revolutions. Good luck!

That is a good idea but I am going to try it with the bag bolted in the seat if I can. I can get to the top of it fairly well.

The threads are bad in the top of the bag. The old tee was broken. The only new tee I could find only has half of the threads as the old one and a o-ring type of seal.

What type of material are you tapping into?? If it were me, I would drill it out, (consult a reference, for the size drill to use). you might want to do your drilling and tapping while holding the part upside down, if contamination with debris is a concern. If it's plastic, It will be easy, otherwise, you have to know the limitations of the material it is made of.

If it has an o ring seal they will be straight threads rather than tapered. Uses a different tap. I would also be inclined to epoxy the old fitting in the air bag.
