his house in the first picture, and his barn in the second picture He was quite a guy, worked at the Mack truck plant in plainfield nj,when it shut down he retired to just farming. I have some really good memories of him,and also of my dad. When I was around 12 to 14 years old,I used to question? my dads work program? quite a bit. Uncle Ruben offered me a job,,,,with some pay,,,,I took it, He was a patient man, being he had one crippled hand from polio,he liked having me there in his older age,he would spend lots of time explaining how to do a job,And,,,,work ,,,hard,,,,we did,,,wayyyy harder than I had to work with my dad ,Looking back,,,,,,I have no way of knowing for sure, but I m thinking the whole thing was arranged! i talked back to my dad,but never to others,he knew that,,,he also knew I was stubborn enough to hang in with Uncle Ruben and not come home where it was easier,I wouldnt admit it to him. Hows that for parenting skills? I wish I could say thank you dad! Now,,,on a tractor related memory,,,Uncle Ruben had an 8n,one with skinny front tires, thats why I looked for one just like it. I wish you all could see how much work he did with that 8n. I have many fond memories of it.He didnt have a brush hog,but he did have a one bottom plow.He took on a job of plowing an overgrown field. My assignment was to walk along side of him while he plowed, any sticker bush,,,push it aside with a stick so he could get through,
(come to think of it that is not a fond memory) a better memory was his his old horse drawn cultivator ,he put a hitch on it.towed it with the 8n I sat on the seat of the cultivator and pushed pedals with my feet, that steered the cultivator,I said before he had patience,it was something to turn that around at the end of the row. Also his home was where I learned to eat deer meat,After a very hard days work,we would go into the house,,,I would be very hungry,my aunt bernadine had dinner ready,no questions what do you like,we are having deer meat,...we ate deer meat everyday i worked there,I learned to love it!

Looks kinda forlorn now.Did you checkout the barn to see if there was anything of interest in it? I wouldn't have been able to resist.

I followed your other posts, I seem to remember a lot of places in that situation, eventually being developed, as I recall from jobs I worked on all over NJ. One thing is for sure, you and your brother certainly meet the criteria, (Ha, ha, whatever that is, no rules apply here LOL) for having interest in old iron, I wish there were more of these places and less new houses, lot more fun to poke around, live or be a part of any of it, must be the kid in us, just bigger toys or hobbies !

What a great place, I know from the postage stamps I've lived in while I was working in that area, not everyone can have or afford any extra space, outbuildings or what would be potentially a nice shop, most have to migrate like you to a more remote area, I did it for years like you for the same darned purpose, could not have both, job, good salary and the place to go with it, even in the best of times LOL !

Pretty pics.

Sadly, need not even be close to a town for this to happen anymore...

Over the last 15 years we have seen two farms get developed into housing lots...clear out in the middle of nowhere!!!

I hate development. Thankfully I have enough buffer, and am pretty far away from major development. My fear is that someday St. Louis and Kansas City will grow out enough to meet in the middle. And I am smack dab in the middle.

Hopefully I will be long gone by then.

Before I am crippled up too much I am gonna take the dozer and bury a couple of truck load of the old, hard, asbestoes shingles that came off of my grandmothers house. That'll screw some future developer !!

anytime I go past a place like that I always think
it would be neat to know the stories they held,
thanks for telling about this one

Naw, since the Asbestos originally came from the
soil and it's since been returned, they'll just
pave over it and make it a parking lot.

LOL
