Bought an old plow truck yesterday.

Hey all,

Bought this beauty yesterday. $4500. Was looking for an International 1900 or 4900 with a DT466, but never could find one I liked. This one has the 7.8 liter Ford diesel, Allison auto, AND air brakes. The air brakes sealed the deal, though I am a little concerned about the 7.8 Liter. I hear they're hard to find parts for.

I'm gonna torch off the plow, mount it on a tractor (probably a 4630 I don't own yet), put a 1000 gallon water tank in the box, and pull an old haguie sprayer around with it.

Good looking truck.

I have an S1900 that has the undercarriage for a plow just like that but didn't come with the plow. I've been searching for one to fit it that is reasonably priced, but haven't found one yet.

Might want to leave the plow on this Winter. You may need it up until April this year.

Also an angled blade on a two wheel drive tractor does not work very well. The front tires will not hold it straight.

You're right about leaving it on. Spent 5 hours in a John deere 317 skid steer and 100" snow bucket on my driveway last Monday. The drive has a 2 foot tall berm on one side and a 6 foot berm on the other, and it's only about 10 feet wide. When I bring that turck home next week, I'm gonna hit the driveway on my way in.

I'd never driven a big plow truck like this and was actually surprised at how well it handled. I thought the plow would throw the front end around real bad, but it was real steady ay 30 mph.

I have a Degelman blade I've used on my 4430 open station and it's OK if you put it in float. a little more wight on the front would help, though. Maybe studding the ribs, too.

we had one of the ford engines in a dump truck and it was a real horse, had trouble keeping rear ends in it

That plow has a lot of curve to it at the top to
throw the snow at high speeds. On a slow speed
tractor, it might do the exact opposite and just
roll the snow around like a big snowball and not
move it off the side much as you'd like. Real good
price on the truck and plow though. I bet the plow
is well over $4500 new by itself.

I don't think it will be as nice as a 466 but that diesel won't give you any trouble. It is new enough that you won't have to worry about a pump for a good while. It least it isn't a 3208. They need help getting out of their own way. Those Ford air brakes are a noisy affair but they are fairly trouble free. The ones I have had grab pretty good. I've always felt that the only thing Ford did right was their larger trucks. I swear by them.

First one I tried out was an 1982 L8000 with 3208. What an awful setup. They do make a lot of noise and not much else. I was already wise to them before I drove it as we had a few in floater trucks. The one in the Terra Gator 1664 put a softball sized hole in the block when we were busiest. Not Cat's shining star by any means.

I wouldn't say I got a STELLAR deal. These trucks can be easily had for 4-9K around here because they were plow trucks. What you can't see in the pics is the doors are about ready to fall off from rust, anything tin in the engine compartment is about rusted through, the radiator has NO fins left in it.... The seller is gonna put some very good doors on it, and change out the radiator. The rest is gonna have to changed out and fixed up as-needed. I'll have to put a better box on it one day. The floor is nearly competely gone.
