RE: Mrs rolled the truck

The insurance company told me it was a "write off" , And that really sucks big time! So now I need a replacement. Ford do not have new Rangers anymore , and none of the local dealers have any late model 4x4 on their lots. Say they can't keep them. So I am looking at a 2014 f150 rag cab 4x4 V8 , for around $25,000.00.Are these trucks any good? Anyone drive one ? Love it , or hate it? Bruce

I'm wondering if they'll total the wife's Ford Explorer SportTrac over some broken plastic. We haven't taken it for an estimate yet. With 275,000 miles on it,I just don't know.
Been thinking about getting her an F250 extended cab short box gas 4x4 and putting a gooseneck ball in it so I can haul the stock trailer with it.

Bruce, My stepson has a 2011 with 5.0 v-8 and has over 50,000 miles with no problems. Lots of power and decent mileage. Chuck

Yep, FOMOCO no longer sells the Ranger. I actually want one, Just like the Chevy Colorado, but the Ranger. Extened cab with the short box. But.......Nope.

I have a 2011 F150, 5.0 gas engine, extended cab and 6.5' bed with just at 60,000 miles on it. No problems so far. Fuel mileage is decent.

I love my 2002. 7.3 and get 17mph. Don't ask what I have hauled with it.

Don't they still sell the Explorer Sport Trac? That's built on the Ranger platform. 4 door four wheel drive. We've had one since 2002.

being a shop owner and pretty much a gm guy, i cannot say anything bad about the f 150. good solid dependable truck. pretty easy to work on too. ford is coming out with a new model f150 that is all aluminum. that one makes me scared.

Friend has a 2012 F150 with the 5.0 engine. Good gas mileage, smooth ride, plenty of power. He is a crop insurance adjuster so the truck gets a workout. So far the only problems have been with the brakes but that's been fixed.

I have an '05 F250 Superduty with the V10 gas engine and six speed tranny. Only problem I've had is 1 rear brake caliper siezed up from not driving it enough. My '03 Ranger with 4.0 V6 gets driven much more.

(quoted from post at 14:14:24 01/30/14) Check out the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier; both are good trucks.

HMMMMM Didn't know Ford made those too. He did ask about the Ford F150.

You wouldn't catch me even looking at one of those. Nissan is 90 miles and the closest Toyota dealer leaves a bit to be desired.

Rick

You have the right to demand that they repair or replace with like truck. Don't take no for an answer. They tried to total mine once I told them they didn't want to make my wife mad they caved in.

It's a 1997 and still looks like the day I bought it has just turned over 90K

Bruce, I would go with the buy it back school of thought....A good car wrecker will have a lot of what you need secondhand.....One with a totalled front will probably have a good roof panel etc. Do your homework, get a local car bodyworker to have a look and give you an estimate then estimate what it would have been worth before the accident and find out what it would take to buy it back....a bit of figuring out will decide if its worth doing. Sometimes you need to get someone else to buy it back?...........Sam

Ford was nuts to quit the Ranger in the US. Quite a few new ones here in Trinidad and all I've seen have diesel engines. I think they still sell them in Mexico also.

The big hang-up with buying a truck back is the truck has been "branded" as an unsafe unfit vehicle , and to put it back on the road here you must have a automotive engineer certify the vehicle ,and have a step by step photo log of all the tear down and replacement of all structural components. Just runs into more money and Bullseet than enough. If I forced the insurance company to repair the truck , I would just give them back their money in increased premium payments. They have made me a reasonable offer , so we will take our lumps , and go forward. Bruce

Don't know about the '14s, but I drive an '08, 4.6L Auto.
It gets better gas mileage than my '04 Ranger V6 auto did
and rides better to boot.
I have 115,000 miles on it. Zero problems so far.
I regularly pull a car hauler with small tractors behind it.
Max I've pulled with it was 8 or 9,000 lbs.
It won't win any races, but gets from point A to point B safely.

I really like the C60 on the trailer. There's a fella near me been asking $6,500 for one in pretty good shape. Inline six, although I'm not sure if the 292 was around back about 1963 or 1964 in its case. I'd like to have it, but that's a bit much for it. Been setting for sale untouched over a year. My guess is that he aint gonna budge, and doesn't look like anyone else is either.

Hi Bruce,
My daughter just bought a 2014 f150 4x4 reg cab. she already has 5 k on it and she loves it and says the mileage is good.
With all the snow they have had in Nova Scotia she is glad to have 4x4.

(quoted from post at 21:09:36 01/30/14) makes me sick when people recommend Toyota or nissan buy american

You should add Dodge to that list now, OPPS I mean Ram, OPPS I mean Fiat cause that's where the profits go.

Rick

The base 3.7 engine gets better mileage than the Ranger and has really decent performance. If you don't need to pull a heavy trailer, I'd recommend one.

Have you checked where Toyota and Nissan make their vehicles now? They make most of their vehicles in the U.S., while a high percentage of so-called "American" vehicles are made in Mexico from imported parts.

I saw your pictures of it and was surprised to see it crash tested that well. Lucky for your wife !

My in laws bought one of the last new Rangers left. They are too old to get in and out of it comfortably. They should of not jumped into such a purchase but too late now.
Father in law is in bad shape now. Has cancer. She was wanting to sell it but not until after he passes ?
I can't figure them out ?
He's such an ornery old man he may just outlast the rest of us ! LOL

There should be plenty around for sale if she really wants one again.

And were does the profit go? They don't make their vehicles here, they assemble them here.

Rick

I heard Ford came out with a heated tailgate this year so your hands won't get cold while your pushing them.

I think the Ranger you guys get is based on the Exploder/Exploder replacement chassis, and not the original Ranger/Exploder truck chassis. Completely different vehicles.
