I am having a starting problem on my John Deere 2440 diesel. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for it? I think the problem will be the ingnition switch or the neutral safety switch.
It will not crank nor is there any "click" when you turn the key to start.

Any trouble shooting hints would be helpful, thanks.

It is kinda cold here in WI. so think warm thoughts while I work on it in a unheated shed.

Check your battery connections first. I had a 2520 a few months ago that went completely dead. Found a bad battery ground. No click- no lights- no nuttin.....

Does that tractor have to have that one lever in park? If you have a test light check power at the key switch, then if yes find the wire on the back of the switch that goes to the small starter terminal.and see if that is hot when switch is in cranking position. I not familiar where the safety switch excaulty, may be someone will chime in shortly on that. Yep all ready -7 in Muskego. Wi

A little more information, trans is a high, low, reverse selector with 8 speeds foreward and four in reverse. I think the safety switch is in the high, low, reverse selector. It is a later model with the tiger stripes. Any help with the wire colors would be great. Thanks.

After you check the wiring connections, jumper the neutral start safety switch(es), to bypass them.

I like to start at the battery, is it charged? In cold weather a discharged battery can freeze and they are never as good after that.

If you have a multimeter, check the voltage across the battery terminals to make sure it has a charge. If no multimeter, check the battery acid in each cell for a charge.

If the battery is good then start looking for poor connections and bad switch contacts. Battery cables can corrode under the insulation.

Have you checked "ALL battery cable connections" especially the ground cable that attaches to battery box? If it was my tractor I'd relocate ground cable to engine block or starter mounting bolt.
Neutral start switch(parts key #19) is under sheet metal cover that the 2 trans gear shift levers protrude through. This is as close to a wiring diagram as I have access.

It's also possible your tractor could have an extra starting relay that was field installed as pictured below.
