the powerstroke saga continues

update on the 01 super duty bogging problem. got the cam sensor installed, and that was not the problem. ran fine for a while, then started doing it again. checked the harness, all seems ok. in desperation, dropped the fuel tank. may have found the problem, not sure. there is a plastic housing in the fuel sender that the pick up snaps into. the pickup seems to be sucking air. if the plastic housing is submerged in fuel, it draws fuel fine. when its above the fuel, it starts to suck air. sooo....we are gonna address that issue and see what happens. a new sender is about 500 dollars. grrrrr

I had an 03 with 7.3 it was bogging and surging, more noticeable when windy and wet, Long story short it ended up in the shop was throwing a code and ended up the wiring was chaffed in one spot. They had 6-7 hours in finding it. Good luck, I would take it to a shop and scan it before I kept throwing money at it.

i have a modis scanner, its not throwing any codes. truck will run fine, than all of a sudden looses power, and wont go over about 40 mph. misses and belches black smoke. shutting down and restarting it would run better, with a slight miss at idle. if its sits over night it will run fine the next day , for a while. 3 diesel shops have worked on it, they could not fix the problem. its a f450 super duty with a vulcan tow package.

It sounds like there is a short in the wiring harness; I had the same problem on my 2000 F350. It took the shop several weeks to find it but the good news is that they only charged me for the first time they worked on it.

Yup. I have the same problem x2 in my 97 powerstroke. Fuel pick up in the tanks (dual tanks) breaks down. When the fuel gets below the level of the break, engine starts sucking air.

Both tanks on my truck are 18.9 gals. Can use 17 gals in front tank before it starts sucking air. Can only use 12 gals in back tank before it starts sucking air.

Since I know how many mpg the engine gets, I use my trip meter to know when to change tanks because the gas gauges don't work either. Repair cost is $500 for each tank.

dave, on the oher post on this problem, one of the fellow yt'ers suggested may a cam sensor is starting to fail. it was a 26 dollar part, and worth a shot. getting pretty desperate to get this girl back on the road, its the winch truck, and we really need it on the road. if i could get it to toss a code, that would be great, but its not tossing any codes.

Hope the fuel pick up was the problem. If not check this out. Post from a Ford mechanic about a similar issue:
the driver side battery has a power lead from the positive side of battery routing underneath the battery tray going to a isolation post (mounted on the inner plastic fender well) .

1) the isolator was bad & the wire leads were corroded.
2) the power lead leads to the junction box was also replaced due to also being corroded .
3) did a break out box resistance check before and after replacement and the power/ shut off issue has been resolved .

Is there a butterfly right after the turbo? My 95 had one that would make the engine bog. Put a small hose clamp the bottom to hold it open, no more bog. HTH

Should I even ask if the shops submitted bills eventhough they didn't fix it? If they did I want some of that.

buy a dodge with a cummins , better milage & power, youll never touch it , engine will outlast truck , to much crap on them fords to go wrong
