I just bought my first tractor and I know very little about it. Does anyone have a late 60's massey ferguson mf40 industrial w/mf32 loader. My 3 point comes up when started but can't be lowered w/lever. It goes down when the engine is shut off. I feels like the lever is real loose. It doesn't feel like it is engaging anything. I can see a rod going through under a 3/4 circle housing but it does not move. I also have a long lever near the right rear wheel that goes into a housing on the rear end; it moves, but doesn't feel like it does anything; I assume it is a differential lock. Can anyone enlighten me on the mf40?

That long lever is indeed the differential lock and could be
broken inside due to miss-use. Check that you have not a roll
pin broken in your hydraulic levers. Even try gripping the rod
with some visegrips and turning it. If that does't work it may have
been dismantled and rebuilt incorrectly. Or one of the little rollers
may have got out of place inside. Try taking off the
dipstick/response control inspection plate at your right
heel....drain the oil down to the level of the lowest bolt on that
plate.....and check to see if the levers are moving any of the
internal controls. Check that the little roller is still between the
forks of the control levers. Use a screwdriver to operate the
control valve to ensure it is not stuck. BUT DO NOT PUT YOUR
HAND INSIDE WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!........Sam

MF40's were made till about 74, maybe 75. Very good
tractors. It sounds like your 3 pt. linkage needs
adjusting or tightening. There should be resistance
when you pull the diff. lock all the way back. You
need to find something slippery to drive on and see
if both wheels will spin together when you pull the
lever back.
