Mecum just auctioned of a v-8 equipped 1953 Corvette gor $2,300,000. Was there a factory upgrade offered for these cars in 1955? I didn't hear the shpeel on the car, but Chevy's first v-8 was 1955. The Corvette sure had the appearance of 100% factory equipment.

I don't follow the auction circuit.

Thanks,
Glenn F.

Hi Glenn, It was also my understanding the first v 8 for chevy was 1955. Maybe there was a test one or something like that. But I did see a couple vets of that vintage as I was in my early teens at the time and they both had 6 cyclinder engines with triple duces for carburation. just my 2 cent worth.

Thank you . According to my wife she was watching Barrett-Jackson and she heard this , When asked what kind of car she didn't know. [wrong auction so how much was she payin' attention] . So it was a Corvette. { far as everything I have read the 53 and 54 were 6 cyl models] I never heard of dealers doing an up grade but google may tell.I remember a guy telling me how he had the biggest motor Chevy had put in his 61 Corvette a 409 upgraded at the Chevy dealer so it seems real possible things like that were common back then.

Appears it was a 56. But reading the description, it was a prototype engine, a 307 with 2 4's, 4 speed instead of PG.
Now, where did they get a 307 in 56? Must have been a 283 (not yet released) with a 327 crank (still years from production). Wish I could have been there, but then I would have only been 1 year old!

Chevrolet trivia: When was the first V8 Chevy? 1955? Nope... I've only heard scant mention of this, but 1912 or 1913... It was a flathead, block cast in 2 pieces. Absolute miserable oil leaking failure. Only a few built, quickly discontinued. Wonder if this was the predecessor of the Vega?

LOL

1953 Corvette, 1st year of production, 235 cu.in. 155 hp. Blue Flame Six w/three carbs. and 2 spd powerslide trans. Also in 1954. The V8 didn't debut until 1955.

More 'Vette trivia - The Ford Thunderbird is the reason the Corvette lives on.

Sales were so abysmal that Chevy considered dumping the Corvette. Then Ford came out with the Thunderbird, which was a huge success. Chevy only kept the 'Vette to keep pace with Ford, which it never did. The Thunderbird outsold the 'Vette by orders of magnitude. The 'Vette was so tied to the 'Bird that they considered making it a four seater when The 'Bird went that way.

The hottest vehicles and tractors today are the ones that were very unpopular then. Rarity breeds desire.

In 1955 Chevy debuted their production V8 in a car. It was a 265 cui. The 283 didn't come along until 57 with fuel injection optional.

That 307 was a horrible engine. No power what so ever. I had one in my 55 belair and tried to blow it up several times. It kept on ticking, but it didn't have any power at all. Now my belair sports a 500 HP 355 :)

Barrett Jackson auctioned off a 1967 Corvette Split window coup (Only 20 made) for 3.1 Million last week. It had 20 original miles on it. They said it rated over 500 h.p. from the factory,.4-speed transmission,Red with black interior.
Some people have too much $$$.
