Sounds like an exhaust valve stuck. The cylinder will exhaust back through the intake manifold when the intake valve opens.

I'd vote for valves stuck as well. Old gas in there? I've found they run just fine and then the first time you shut them down they stick due to the deposits on the stems. You only thought the fuel was fine.

Well timing just doesn't jump out of time on it own on a tractor unless you have major gear wear which is not likely. This time of year you need a bit richer setting on the carb to run well so it maybe running lean which will cause that so if choking it helps well you nee to open up the main jet a tad bit. Or you may need to adjust the valves which need to be done from time to time

I just replaced my "cracked" exhaust manifold with a "yesterday's Tractor new one with new exhaust pipe etc. Generator was just rebuildt and re installed also.

Thanks to all!

I think that is the same motor as an F20 if so, how often do you fill the oil cups on top of the valve cover?

Diy, I was thinking along the same line but didn't want to say it. LOL.

Another cause could be a chunk burned out of a valve, but the tractor would have to be working hard to do that. Happened to my OLiver 88 grinding feed. One more cause could be something stuck under the valve. I had a carburetor screw go in the engine and stick under an exhaust valve once but the engine was knocking before it went out the valve. Jim

So did the popping start right after the new manifold?? If yes then the carb setting may in fact be off due to the new manifold not being 100% the same as the old one or you could have a vacuum leak at the block/manifold or the carb gasket

(quoted from post at 19:07:07 01/22/14) Old,
Thanks for your advice, yes 2nd time I have run her since the new YT manifold.

Since it started right after replacing the manifold I am inclined to think there may be a piece of debris from the old manifold and gasket stuck in one of your intake valves

F30 I have an idea you're on the right track. It might have gone in an intake and stuck under an exhaust on the way out? Jim

One way to help clear up a sticking Valve or maybe debris under a valve is this:

Fill a normal sized oil (squirt) can with clean oil..
Take the air-tap plug out of the Intake with the engine running at about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle, put the tip of the squirt-can in and cover the hole with your finger..
Squirt oil in as FAST as the engine will take it without killing the engine. ( Be SURE NOT to do this inside your Shop.!!)
There WILL be Great Billows of Smoke for a while..!!
Works wonders...
We did this twice a year on our JD "B" tractors and they didn't burn valves (had been a major problem, before the mufflers came off).
Try it, you'll LIKE it..!!!!
You may want to tell the neighbors, so they don't call the Fire Dept..!!

Ron.

no such thing as plugs or timing causes popping. its valve train, such as a burnt exhaust valve , or could be stuck open, and also a cam lobe worn off will cause popping in the intake also. and if it just started popping then most likely a burnt valve.

Oh golly, I should have read your post more thoroughly. You said popping in the INTAKE. You just might have something stuck under the INTAKE valve. Sheesh, time for a beer. No, I haven't had one yet. Jim
