water heater in below freezing temps

If there is no freeze protection on the supply or the system beyond, leave the water trickle on the far reach of the system, at a rate that is just barely a stream and not a series of drips. Less can freeze, more wastes radical amounts of heat and water. Jim

If your worried about it you could put a 1/4 line to let the water thermo siphon circulate, that would prevent the immediate piping from freezing. If the room around it is well insulated the waste heat should keep it heated somewhat.

K here's more to the story, I've been planning on getting bucket calves, well I ended up with them before I was ready for them. So I need hot water in the barn which I have hooked up already, but I'm building a heated room for a "prep" area and to keep all the supplies in. The catch is, I won't have it done tonight. I've wrapped heat tape around both the in and out lines on the tank, which is what I always had on the line with no issues. Am I safe for the night?

If you have electric to the barn you could wrap incoming and out going pipes with thermostat controled heat tapes.

The heater itself should be OK if you have it wired and operating. It will just use a large amount of electricity. You can get water heater blankets for extra insulation, or you could build a small closet around it and insulate it well. If it is not operational as of yet, as someone already suggested, just keep the water running a little.

If you have tape on the open pipes aneven if the heater is off, it would take several days to chill it to freezing unless it is open to the wind, and zero. If it is running no way will it freeze. Jim

to keep water circulating in the tank have the lower element set a little higher then the top that way hot rises cold sinks its a good way to do it normally to keep the water circulating in the tank

Just FYI- don't wrap the tape around the pipe. Run it along the bottom and tape it there. Heat rises. Put pipe insulation over it. Frozen pipes thaw a lot faster this way.
