O/T Just got home from the boy's first archery tournament.

My 9 yr old just did his first big time tourny and he did very well for himself. He shot 10 rounds of 3 arrows with a score of 191 and went 2 rds in the elimination. Only to because his glucose level dropped and couldn't focus on what was going on. I AM ONE PROUD DAD this evening. My hats off to you my son. Proud Trucker !

Educate me. Is he diabetic? You check his level how? How fast? How can you prevent it?
I am assuming he is at some level diabetic.

Yes he is type 1 and has been since he was 23mo old. He was 70 and a normal range for him is 100-120. It was a small problem of he wanted food so we pumped insulin for it and he didn't eat the food. WELL CRAP now we had to cover insulin and it didn't catch up in time. He is checked with a glucose meter and a constant glucose meter [CGM]. Prevention is easy eat first and pump later or only for what is ate. CGM checks every 5 min and shows a trend graph on if he is climbing, falling or maintaining. Type 1 doesn't slow him down one bit and his mother is on it like white on rice to keep his levels in check. His younger brother is also type 1 since he was 4 and now is 7. The 2 on the tractor is my oldest and the other is my youngest and quite the character.

Looks like a great family! Kinda rough having to deal with something like that, but they know a lot more about it now than they did when I was growing up. I went to school with a boy, both his parents were teachers, and they had a time with it.

Super Trucker,My heart goes out to him,If theres anything I can do to help him compete in archery let us know.I strugle financly but I can help purchase some of his expences if you need something, archery is not cheap,Ive done some years ago and it helped me with my glucose problems by giving me excerise.God love his heart

In the first picture he appears to be very intent but looking off to the side. You must be waving instructions to him, LOL.

give him our congratulations, cudos to your wife. my brotherinlaw was diagnosed with it when he was 6yo, went to college, is 42 yo now, still no real health issues, is a dad, boy scout leader, always was serious with diet/ health

We appreciate all the help. Financially we are set but we are in need of any good tips and pointers on the new style bows. I belong to a club that is heavily into shooting and archery. We have had 3 Olympic archery shooters to come from our club. And we are sending a young lady to France to compete at the World National Indoor Championship ( The TOP 3 in the country were the only ones invited ! ). Dad needs help trying to learn the new stuff .

They look like great kids. I have 2 grandsons about like them and they have a few health issues also.
Good luck with the archery. Find him some old Howard Hill videos. He killed elephants with recurve bows.

You have every reason to be proud!
I remember watching your son work the dead pull sled
at the tractor pulls in Ionia too.
He knew exactly what to do and when.
I was quite impressed that he wasn't distracted.
Most boys that age have a pretty short attention span.

My family has a history of diabetes too, including my father.
It skipped me thankfully, but it doesn't seem to slow kids down.
Let 'er rip! :)

It is with the club I belong to. Now we are joining the JOAD team and will travel a bit. The JOAD program (Junior Olympic Archery Development)is a great program for ANY kid that has a interest in archery.

(quoted from post at 19:35:45 01/19/14) You can't beat that, when the parents do things with their kids. The kids will never forget that either.
I take that to be the voice of experience speaking and I couldn't agree more!
