When I turn the key on radio comes on. Then when
I go to use the fan switch or wiper radio goes
out and nothing works. I am assuming ground but
not sure where exactly to start looking.

I'd start at the switch, could be loose connection that comes apart with the spark created when you turn the heater on. When it cools down it moves back into place.

I know on most newer big trucks the ground is run thru the computer, You really need to get a wiring diagram and save you tons of work finding the problem. That would be best. Well worth the money if your going to keep the tractor. Look and see if the switches have two wires running into harness that could mean ground is thru the computer and problem is usually in one of the connectors going back to the computer, Clean connectors and use dielectric grease on the connectors. Other wise see if it has any body grounds, clean them. Good luck with it.

Just for giggles, grab a set of jumper cables. Grab a matching color clamp at each end, and snap one end to a the cab frame and one end to the (-) terminal of a battery (making good connections, of course) and see what happens.

If that fixes it, there"s a flat braided ground strap between the two, probably in a battery access door area that needs attention.

Does the tractor start If not the best place to start is by taking the battery cables off and cleaning them . They can look clean and have a crust between the post and the cable . More then once I have found very little contact on a cable and it acted just like yours is .

Is it the factory radio or was it replaced at some time in the past? Sounds like the radio was replaced at some time and the ground could be hooked into a power wire for something else. It acts as a ground til you put power to the other circuit. 4840 at work was done like that, turn the right wiper on and the radio shuts off. Done by a JD shop.....

Like Allen says, cab relay. Not fun to get at on those 50 series with the senty and senty wiring in the way. Easy to verify, just jump across the cab relay large terminal and see if radio and fans work then. Might be the connections at the relay are loose or corroded also.

Remove the panel in frt of dash and check all circuit breaker connections on the 4840 board.

I agree cab relay on the IHC.

(quoted from post at 16:57:57 01/18/14) 30 year old tractor No computer..

Actually the 50 series tractors were the first IH tractors to use a computer. The Sentry is a very basic computer that controls the transmission shifting.

The easiest way to check to see it the electrical problem is with the supply or the ground is to check to see if the flashing lights on the cab also go out when the radio quits. They are powered through the lighting circuit and not the cab relay.

My vote is the cab relay, but ck the fuse block too, the terminals get weak on the fuse and lose connection gets hot.
