Fighting Rust

I was giving the doors of my wife's '07 Escape the anti-rust treatment that I have described before. I also crawled under from back to front looking for any problems. I found that the drains for the rocker panels, two on each side were nearly blocked by a folded over edge of the outer skin. If no dust got in water could have come out, but of course dust did get in there. I got them opened up, three were dry but one had moisture above it. Maybe I have held penetrating rust off five years from when it would have been.

We take either a good strong garden hose stream or the pressure washer and get into the frame holes as often as we can. The amount of sand and salt that can get into the frame through those holes is crazy! We're going to try to get them real clean and dry on SWMBO's Jeep and hit it with rust proofing this spring. Local guy has had good luck getting his vehicles Ziebarted every year. Most folks look at rustproofing as a one time deal, maybe his way is better.

Check the drain holes in the doors. Wife had a Lincoln that had plastic inserts with a movable flapper in the drain holes. I noticed water seeping out of one a few days after we'd had rain. Popped the inserts out and got more than a half gallon of muddy water out of each door!
