Another thought for the day

“As for the Pyramids, there is nothing to wonder at in them so much as the fact that so many men could be found degraded enough to spend their lives constructing a tomb for some ambitious booby, whom it would have been wiser and manlier to have drowned in the Nile, and then given his body to the dogs.”
¯ Henry David Thoreau,

I have always been amazed that they had a good enough food supply that they could dedicate that much time to building tombs! Most civilizations of that time spent all their time trying to feed themselves or stay warm. Although there is a huge burial mound somewhere near St. Louis MO, and another in Ireland.

Actually the current thought is that the pyramids were mostly built with hired labor in the off growing season.

So just how is hiring on to do a job degrading?

Slave labor as used by the Romans had little choice. It was work or die. And if a slave refused their death would be an example to the other slaves.

I don't think staying warm was much of a problem. The annual floods along the Nile fertilized the soil and allowed for better crops than most other places at the time. And northern Africa hasn't really been a desert for all the long.
