1000 Mile Tractor Road Trip

Have any of you driven a tractor a great distance? Sometime I would like to find the perfect little 430 CASE on the east coast and drive it the 1000 miles to Green Bay. I figure I could comfortably make the non-freeway trip in 10-12 days. Motel 6, camping, small towns, etc.

What a wonderful way to see the country side. I suppose a little gas tractor could get around 20 mpg.

Just something I'd like to do....

I am sure you have your reason for wanting to come East to home but why not go Southwest and find something. A lot more open country and more to see. Going to be a lot of freeways and congestion coming East. Anyway if planned could be a fun two weeks.

This will mark the 3rd year that a group has driven all the way across Nebraska on a tractor. The trip is usually in the neighborhood of 450 to 500 miles when all is said and done.

I figger I've put somewhere around 150,000 miles on tractors, but it was mostly going 'round and round' and 'back and forth'; what you propose might be fun..........

Do a search for "Track The Tractor"
It's a website by a guy that drove a
John Deere 60 from Florida to Michigan
to raise money for Reilys Childrens hospital
in Indianapolis.

100 mi per day is a good long ride as you have traffic, fuelstops, eat and a break. Have plenty of air in the tires unless you dont care about wear. How comfortable is the seat that is one important thing and dont forget the engine noise. Having weather for 10 days to drive a tractor will be a challenge

Driving across Neb would be a piece of cake compared to driving from the east coast to Green Bay with towns, towns, towns and rough roads he will be travelling.

That would be an exciting trip. We do the three day Double u H Oh (WHO Radio DSM Ia) tractor ride each June. 70-80 miles first two days then about half that the third. I would be terribly nervous setting out on a 1000 mile ride without some history with the tractor. But I get a little nervous each day, will this thing make thru today. lol. Need to have a partner following along with the truck and trailer. You are right about using a Case 430. good high speed road gear. GO FOR IT !!!! gobble

Yea, I figure the tractor n' me'd be "one flesh" by the time we get home. If a 60 JD can make such a trip, anything can........

shux,,. I am game , I think I could put 150 miles behind my liberty 430 diesel on a good day , it would probably burn only 5 gallon of diesel while a gasser will use 2 full tanks of gas ...,eeerhhh?? ,, you know the tires will wear severe in above 80 degree heat?? ,..that said,, bak when the Floyd Central highlanders( niknamed SUPERHICKS by the looser new Albany cityboy crybabies ) went to state basketball finals in 1971,, serveral cheerleaders convinced a DAD and the local massey dealer to lend them a new 285 massey with cab ,rotating yellow caution lites ,, to drive 130 miles to indy to butler field house for the game, temps were 40 degrees, rain all the way,we all seen him off at the hi school at 8 am , they say he got there around 4 pm drivin up 31 , he musta never stopped , ,, and the tires were still like new ...

I don"t know about a tractor but I have a restored 38 GMC 1 1/2 ton top speed 40 pushing it and some people get pretty rude when they can"t drive their normal speed.

Back in the 80's a couple from England drove a Field Marshall tractor across America from Boston to San Francisco. They stopped at the Two-Cylinder show. Had a map on the side of the trailer they were pulling, interesting to talk with them. Later read a article about them in a magazine article after they finished the trip. How's that for a tractor ride?

Glenn, sorry but staying in a Motel 6 is NOT a wonderful way to see the countryside.

Have you been east of Green Bay the last few years (around the lake, not in it)? No offense to easterners, but the roads east are horrendous, BTDT....Ford is interested in using them for their new torture track...and the traffic is more than heavy.

I suggest you need to do what Gene Bender and I do....sign up for the WMT Radio tractorcade for this coming June. This Iowa ride is for 3 days, covering about 160 miles. And, only 550 tractors will come along with you! They split it up into 7 different speed groups so about 80 tractors per group. Police, sheriffs, state patrol are at every intersection and you just roll thru while all traffic waits for you to pass. And the food is so plentiful I calculated last year I averaged 100 calories per mile.

There will be 5 in our group from central Wisconsin, several others from around the state, plus there is at least one guy from Green Bay who joins in. Drivers come from LA, CA. VA. FL, MN, ND, SD, etc.

This is a good way to get your taste of a long range ride before you get into something you might regret.

Search for: WMT Radio Tractorcade.

Do a search for The American Agriculture Movement Tractorcade to Washington. You will find a lot of people reminiscing about taking part on YouTube.

Not a trip I'd recommend. How many tractors get rear ended every year? If you want to take a tractor road trip do it as part of an organized outing like some of the others have mentioned.

Quite a few years ago a fellow came through here (Southern Il.) on a Farmall H. He had a wagon behind with a home-made camper. He had come from Wi. Said he was going to New Orleans. He was staying on secondary roads, even field roads. He seemed to want to stop and talk, and find out how to get across the rivers on the less traveled roads.

Back about 1962, I drove my M-M "U" tractor 250 miles in two days.First day was towing a "Scott" pea viner from northern Ill. to Beaver Dam.Wis.
Second day was the return trip.I got paid very well for both ways. There was six of us going up , but just me on the return trip.
Turned the tires around backwards to lessen the wear, That really made a difference.
Tractor rides are not new to me, L O L. I have thought about writing about that trip, it was interesting and fun. oleclint

I hauled 20 loads of hay last fall with my Cockshutt 1855 ,5 loads/day, 18 ml round trip each load ,360 ml total. I Was plumb wore out every day from that noisy tire hopping contraption.
I don't think they could pay me enough to drive that or any other tractor a 1000 ml just for fun.

Are you going to get a sponsor for tires? Several years ago a guy drove an MF combine from Alberta, I think, to Ottawa to protest something farmer related. Forget exactly what it was but he went through 3 sets of tires. One of the tire manufacturers(Goodyear?)supplied the tires though.

turn rear tire around backwards and air up pretty tight. drove from south Ar. to DC when the american agri. movement took place in the early 70's
